I select a part using categories and load it into a performance. Now, do changes that I make to the part from the performance home screen change the part globally or only in reference to the performance in which I made the changes?

All changes you make to a Part within a Performance are to that Performance only.
The concept of the Voice (as in previous a Yamaha synths is no longer necessary). The MODX (and MONTAGE) have significantly more memory, so every time you create an instrument Part it is autonomous.
You can use the Category Search function to copy any Part from within any Performance to any other Performance. Editing it in its new home will not adversely affect it anywhere else. Each instance is total autonomous.
When you make changes to an existing Part, you must [STORE] the Performance to a User Bank location.
