Hello, I just recently purchased the MODX6+ and was wondering is there a way to set it up to play piano and Rhodes from a external weighted keyboard and play the synth, organ etc parts from the MODX?
Hello, I just recently purchased the MODX6+ and was wondering is there a way to set it up to play piano and Rhodes from a external weighted keyboard and play the synth, organ etc parts from the MODX?
The short answer is YES. One of the instruments needs to be configured as the Controller and not only play sounds but be configured to play sounds on the 'controlled' instrument.
Which instrument do YOU intend to play? It sounded like that 'from a external weighted keyboard' suggests that is the keyboard you actually want to pound ALL of the keys on but you want synth and organ sounds to be produced by the Modx.
Is that right?
If so Bad Mister explains how to do that in 'option 3' of his article MODX MIDI SETTINGS EXPLAINED

3) you are using the MODX as a MIDI Tone Generator – receiving MIDI data
You configure the external keyboard to send MIDI to the Modx and then it will play that midi.
Make sure you read the section that begins with this:
Most Frequently Asked Question (MIDI): What generates the most questions is how to play the MODX from an external controller that can only transmit on a single MIDI channel.
You are totally correct!!! Thank you so much Toby!
I know I mostly referred you to an article but that particular article just happens to have all the info you should need.
Don't hesitate to post any specific questions if you run into issues.
One thing I would suggest is that you keep your initial tests as simple as possible until you get the process worked out for using the Modx as a slave for one performance and part that has already been set up and is ready to go.
You may also have a need to have your external keyboard send Program Change messages to the Modx to get it to change its performance if you use more than one.
