Is it possible to reassign the CC# of the mod wheel when controlling external MIDI devices? For example if I want to resign the transmitted mod wheel CC# to 29 to control the filter cutoff of a synth connected to the MIDI out of the MODX.

Working with a DAW
When setting up the MONTAGE/MODX/MODX+ to work as a Remote Control Surface device for a computer-based DAW, you are provided a REMOTE mode. This allows you to customize much of the front panel for this purpose. When you launch “Remote” most of the front panel becomes DAW assigned controls. Communication will be setup via “Mackie Control” on USB-MIDI Port 2. You will be able to read the names of VSTi patches, names of Tracks, etc. directly from your DAW in your MODX+ screen.

Reassign CC#s in “Remote”
From the HOME screen:
Touch “Remote” > “Track” or “Remote” > “Plugin” along the bottom.
(CC# can be used for DAW Track or for VSTi Plugins).

And then touch “Control 1” and then “Control 2” along the top to view and edit the assignments.

Tap the “Edit” in the upper right corner to set the CC# and action mode (whether it is Momentary/Latch).
Tap “Done” to finish assignments.

“Control 1” includes Knobs 1-8; the Super Knob; Sliders 1-8; Scene buttons 1-8
“Control 2” includes Foot Switch/FS mode; Foot Control 1; Foot Control 2; AssignSw 1/AssignSw 1 mode; AssignSw 2/AssignSw 2 mode; Motion Seq Hold/Hold mode; Motion Seq Trigger/Trigger mode

Ribbon/Ribbon Reset/Hold mode* (*MONTAGE only)
MW, PB Wheel, Aftertouch are not reassignable in Remote Mode.

Extra Credit:
The above work when in “Remote > Plugin” or “Remote > Track”, however, when you select “Remote > Transport” you will notice the front panel reverts to controlling the MODX/MODX+, as normal. You would switch to “Transport” to use the MODX/MODX+ front panel for the MODX/MODX+ and to Start/Stop/Continue/Return-to-Top/Arm Record/Locate FF/RW and otherwise manipulate your synth as usual. This makes switching between control devices quick and easy.

Switch back to “Plugin” or “Track” to continue DAW REMOTE functions.

Working with CC#s (Non DAW)
If you are controlling an external device via standard 5-pin MIDI connection… you would setup to use the MODX+’s “Zone Master” function. This allows you to configure a special Performance Part slot exclusively for your external device (called a Zone). You do so by:
1 - activate the global Zone Master switch [UTILITY] > “Settings” > “Advanced” > Set “Zone Master” = On
2 - in your Performance activate the Zone Switches inside your Performances… you can now determine if and what gets sent Out via MIDI from each active Part slot (Zone).

Now each Performance can include external synth setup parameters (“Zone Settings” and “Zone Transmit” preferences).
When you activate a Zone within a Performance, you can set the INT SW (Internal Switch) to Off and replace it with the routing Out to your external synth by setting a MIDI Channel.

The external synth will be addressed in a similar fashion to internal Parts and by the same CC#s as internal Parts but naturally, on their own discreet MIDI Channel. Literally, as a Part of the MODX+ Performance you can begin to treat it like it belongs there.

You can still customize the CC# sent by the MODX+ on a per Performance basis. These include Ribbon Control, Breath Control, Foot Control 1, Foot Control 2, Assign Switch 1, Assign Switch 2, Motion Seq Hold, Motion Seq Trigger, Assign Knob 1-8.
Here’s how: From the HOME screen, press [EDIT] > “Control” > “Control Number”

You can customize what CC# is used for this Performance.
And you can determine whether or not a Part/Zone will ignore it. You can also determine if a Part/Zone will send it or not on its MIDI Channel.

‘What’ it controls and ‘how much’ any of these controllers will do will depend on the individual programming at the receiving Part/device.
