Hi

I have created a split performance with a CP80 Chorus on the right hand, and a Finger Pick Bass on the left side.
If I press the Assign Switch 1 I get a nice tremolo sort of effect on the piano, however the bass part seems to jump an octave or two higher (and quieter).
Looking in the Edit page of the Bass part, I can see that the Assign 1 switch causes Element 4 to sound, in place of Element 1.
I cannot see how this is done exactly, as I would like to disable this result and just have Element 1 to sound.
I remember seeing this sort of function used where people have actually used the assign switch to get two completely different voices out of the one part...
cheers

Thanks for the question. Sounds like you have run into the some real time control function of the Assign Switches.

*Select* the Bass Part “Finger Pick Bass AF”
Press [EDIT]
Along the bottom of the screen are listed the Elements (Elem 1-8) each active Element appears in bright blue, and has a radio button that lights when the Element is actually sounding.

Touch “All” to view all the Elements that make up the “Finger Pick Bass AF” (by the way, “AF” means there is an Assignable Function Switch assignment active in this sound. A Bass that seemly jumps an octave is probably switching to an articulation that delivers a harmonic note as the expanded articulation). Ala the great Jaco Pastorius...
Here you can see when each of the Oscillators is due to make sound. The grid here is an overview of all your AWM2 Tone sources.

You have an “Element On/Off Switch“. Green is active.
You have the “XA CONTROL“ (Expanded Articulation Control) which determines when an Element should sound— likely the Elements are being told to only sound when a specific set of conditions exist. For example, “A.Sw1 On”, “A.Sw2 On”, “A.Sw Off”... will determine the conditions under which the Element will sound. This is musically useful and is very different from a MUTE.

A Mute disconnects something from the audio output bus, this XA CONTROL differs from a Mute as it determines whether or not the Element will even begin to make sound. Therefore, pressing the Assign Switch for XA CONTROL is sonically invisible... nothing gets cutoff, nothing starts automatically; When the button is engaged - while it is engaged - a new Note-On event will follow the listed instructions to make sound or not.

“Normal“ will let the Element sound whenever a Note-On Event occurs in its given Note Limit and Velocity Limit Range.

You can set Elements 1 and 2 = XA CONTROL = Normal
You can set the Element Switch to Element #4 to Off (grey).
STORE you edits to update your Performance.

Hope that helps.

Extra Credit
Note Limit - in MIDI, the ‘mythological‘ keyboard has 128 Notes from C-2 through G8
For reference: an Acoustic Piano with 88 Keys extends from A-1 through C7
A 73-key MIDI keyboard extends from E0 through G6
A 61-key MIDI keyboard extends from C1 through C6

Yamaha uses the convention where C3 = middle “C”
