Hi there,

So I recorded a midi track into Cubase - I played Part 3 in the performance which is the bass part which I would like to have play as a backing track because I cannot play bass and the other parts at the same time with my two hands.

I edited the part and then exported the midi file and have played it back in Audacity to check that it's working.

I have saved the midi file (6.23kB)  to the MODX and under Play/Rec I have selected it under both the MIDI and Pattern tabs however when I press play I get nothing.

At one stage of pressing randomly I did get it to come through but it seemed to have created a new performance called "Copy" and it was playing part 1 - i need it to play the bass part which is Part 3.

If anyone can point me in the direction of a tutorial on this or can explain how to do it that would be much appreciated.

David

Is your MODX configured in single or multi channel mode?

What is your MIDI setup in Cubase?  Specifically, what does the input MIDI channel(s) indicate for each track and what do the output MIDI channel(s) indicate for each track?

Just FYI since I don't think this is the problem - here is a tutorial on the 'record to daw' piece

https://yamahasynth.com/learn/modx-series-synthesizers/modx-midi-record-on-daw/

I edited the part and then exported the midi file and have played it back in Audacity to check that it's working.

That confirms that it is a valid midi file OF SOME FORMAT AND VERSION.

I have saved the midi file (6.23kB) to the MODX and under Play/Rec I have selected it under both the MIDI and Pattern tabs however when I press play I get nothing.

The question that raises for me is whether there are some versions/formats fo MIDI files that are NOT supported on the MODX.

Does playing other MIDI files work on both MODX and Audacity for that performance?

Hi Jason,

I will check again shortly , but when I play the MIDI file from Cubase it plays the correct part  (Part 3) on the MODX - so I am guessing there is something in the MIDI file that tells it to play Part (Channel ) 3?

In the sidebar (I think it's called track inspector) I have selected 3 - not sure if this refers to input or output channel?

Hi Jason,

I still need to understand this stuff better, but I have found a workaround in this case - by exchanging the bass part from part 3 to Part 1.

It now seems to work so it appears that the midi file is set to Channel 1?

Another issue I ran into is that I have two scenes and when I hit Scene 2  - where I've got to watch the screen and hit scene 2 button right at bar 22 - the pattern starts again, which is not want I want.

So I created another midi file and loaded it into Scene 2 and it seems to work.  However when I look at the pattern name on Scene 1 and Scene 2 it appears to be the same pattern, but it is not?

I also saw under Utility the MIDI I/O multi vs single selection, so I should probably stick to multi next time?

You have single selected now?  It isn't clear.  But to answer your question - either mode can work.  Multi-channel mode would be my preference however.

In single channel mode you need to make sure the MIDI comes back to the channel which you assign as the Transmit/Receive channel - whatever that happens to be.  And "everything" should be transmitted to this same channel so if you record in your DAW everything verbatim (and send it back verbatim) you should have the right things happening.  It's when you start re-channeling MIDI data that you will run into trouble.

You can setup only one MIDI track in Cubase with the MIDI channel set to "All" then all 16 channels will be recorded on a single track and playing back this track would resolve the channels.  You may want to split out each channel for your workflow - which you can do by dissolving this track.  Certain things would be easier this way.  But also try working with a single track with all MIDI channels stored in a single track.
