Why is it when I add an existing single patch to a multi the dry level is 0 and var send is 127? Also, after I set the var send to zero and dry level to 127 the volume of the added single patch seems dramatically lower than the original. I hope this makes sense.

I don't know about the initial values ... never noticed that.
About the volume changes: the variation effect, as well as the reverb, are added to the dry Part. This means that any change in var / reverb send and/or return will change the final output volume. Maxed out the audible change can be some 3-6 dB, depending on the effect in use and the frequency content of the sound.
