I was in a Yamaha licensed Store today.

I bought a Yamaha Sustain Pedal FC4A and a Yamaha Expression Pedal F7.

I asked about Tap Tempo. He had no idea.

I thought maybe a FC5, but they didn't have those anyway.

If 3rd Party Boss, Strymon, EHX tap tempo pedals will work, I could get one of those fairly easy.

A simple momentary pedal like the Yamaha FC4A or FC5 both have a TS plug - (Tip-Sleeve) can be used to Tap Tempo
By contrast, you can see the FC7 Foot Controller has an TRS plug - (Tip-Ring-Sleeve) - it is designed for the Foot Controller 1/2 duties (sweep pedal)

A simple sustain type (momentary) pedal will work as Tap Tempo with the following setup:

Plug the momentary pedal into the ASSIGNABLE Foot Switch port...
Press [UTILITY] > “Settings” > “MIDI I/O” > set the “FS Assign” = Tap Tempo

Extra Credit:
This setting along with the current Utility settings will be written into all User Files (.X8U) that you make from this point on.
