This was first reported on another forum for an M6 issue. I can reproduce it on an M8X using a simple test.

The performance 'American Beauty' is the culprit and it exists on the original Montage but not the Modx or Modx+.

1. load the performance

2. play and release middle C - then wait the 3+ minutes it takes to freeze the machine

3. you will hear a repeating arpeggio

4. around 2+ minutes you will hear an ever-so-slight change in the arpeggio - almost like some notes dropping out

5. somewhere between 3 and 4 minutes the sound dies down to a steady low volume siren/buzz

6. the screen and front panel controls are frozen and have no effect

That performance has 4 parts and with additional testing I've narrowed the problem down to part 2.

1. fresh reboot

2. deleted parts 3 and 4

3. copied part 2 to part 1

4. deleted part 2 - so now you have a 1 part performance with only the original part 2 and perf common

5. turned off Ins A and Ins B

6. saved the performance as test1

Then tested

1. fresh reboot

2. loaded the test1 performance

3. pressed fx and turned off all 4 effect switches

4. went to performance home

5. played and released middle C

6. test results were the same as before - entire machine frozen after 3+ minutes

Another test to remove any common level performance interaction

1. fresh reboot

2. load Init Normal (AWM2) - I'm expecting this to eliminate any performance level considerations (assigns, etc)

3. add the test1 performance as part 2

4. same result as before

That 'part 2' has 6 arpeggios listed and #1 is 'MA_SynArp4'. That appears to be the one heard but it could be one of the others. Scene 1 is the default of 5 scenes.

Watching the dancing element lights only elements 1-4 light up and when it freezes elements 1,2 and 4 and lit up.

No front panel lights, buttons or sliders change. There is no visual indication on any kind.

Another test - copy ONLY arp 1 to an Init to play it in isolation and it sounds a lot different than when played by the part.

The problem never occurs.

Another test - copy all 6 elements from the problem part 2 to an Init part 1 then delete part 2.

1. save

2. reboot

3. load the init with the 6 elements from the problem part 2

4. problem occurs 3+ minutes in as before

Could be a memory leak, polyphony issue or who knows?

If someone tests this on an original Montage please post results. The simple test is load 'American Beauty', press and release middle C and wait at least 5 minutes to see if it crashes.

I tried reproducing it on the Montage classic; However after 10 minutes, the Arp was still running with no issues or change in sound.

So far it appears to only be an issue on the M!

Thanks for checking.

That is such a basic performance and that part only uses 6 elements so I wonder if the performance itself was modified for the M models or if it is more an OS/programming issue like a memory leak.

I'll update things if I hear back from support. Interesting that it is so easy to reproduce the problem - just press one key and wait 3+ minutes.

I received an update from support confirming the behaviour.

I was able to reproduce this. This Performance is from MOTIF XF and there may be something up with how it functions in MONTAGE M. The development team is looking into it. Thanks for the detailed observation.

The credit for 'the detailed observation' belongs to the person that first posted the issue on an M6 in another forum.

Min test case that reproduce the 'freeze':

1. create a new Init Normal (AWM2) and add American Beauty perf part 2 as part 2

2. turn off InsA and InsB turned OFF

3. remove arps 2-6

4. remove all common and part control assigns

5. turn off elements 6,5,3,2 - only element 1 and 4 remaining

6. remaining perf uses arp 6528 and waveform 2284, no effects on, no motion sequences, one arp

7. machine freezes after 3-4 minutes

8. turning off element 1 and there is no sound but the machine never freezes. Of course you never hear anything but the controls work.

Element 4 NEVER produces a sound but the element light flashes so it is being triggered.

It uses #2284 'Bell St1' waveform but you never hear it. Seems to be some combination of the arp and element not sounding.

That waveform sounds find if used in a different performance.

The same perf from the free MOTIF XF PERFORMANCES library also freezes so the problem doesn't seem to be related to any changes that may have been made to the performance when adding it as a preset.
