This is NOT OFFICIAL Yamaha response but I've tried about 5 brands (Samsung, PNY, a couple GENERIC no names, Sandisk, ..) USB 2 and 3 and so far they all worked.

but I had filled it to about 75% of capacity with libraries & sample sets so I moved up to a 64 GB thumb drive (for growth - even though 64GB is NOT "approved"). Past 64 GB's I might go back to my old Motif XS 120 GB external USB 2 HDD that I initially hooked up to my Montage 7 for transfer of already converted from XS to XF "stuff." (it's just dangerous and aesthetically unpleasing to have it sitting in upper right hand corner of board)

As a BTW: the latest firmware update to from 1.10 to 1.11 I used a very OLD PNY 8GB thumb drive - it worked error free.

Having said the above, I am obliged to say: SAFE MONEY says "ONLY USE what Yamaha documentation says to use!!"

Most small 32GB (yikes, I have to smile coming from keyboards where 720Kb was huge), most small 32GB or less USB sticks that do not have copy protection software built-in will work. More do than don't. Thing is we cannot test every single USB stick. But you would have to be unlucky to find one that simply does NOT work.

If it has some kind of copy protection software installed on it, usually you can get a removal tool from the drive's manufacturer to get that stuff off of there (no, formatting it does not remove the copy protection, wouldn't be much protection, if you could just format it).

The thing about recommended compatibility lists is, obviously they cannot include every possible device. There are more that are compatible than are not. Going bigger than 32GB is simply risky, not that they won't work, but I would say a USB stick that large tends to make one extremely lazy. If it does go down, all your work is gone.

I keep several smaller drives around and back them up to my computer, often. No one knows, really, how prolific some one else is but it's unlikely you need anything as big as 120GB, seriously. I keep several 8 and 16 GB sticks around.

Agreed (re: losing work) that's why I keep dual redundant MIRRORED spares one discreetly kept out of sight on the keyboard and one NOT on, or near, the keyboard.

I do this for all accessible media that's in all my HW (even old and HARD to get media like 3 volt and 5 volt SM cards) only an idiot, or a noob, wouldn't keep at least ONE backup current ready to go. Truism "one is none, two is one" this also applies to mics, cables, strings, sticks, amp tubes, fuses, pedals, stands, lights, ... as well as MEDIA.
