I own the MOXF8, which has a really cool feature when you just want to jam along to some drum patterns. On the right side there is a button called "Drum Assign" that allows you to quickly add a drum pattern to any voice and play along.
There does not appear to be this same capability on the Montage. Does anyone know how to add drum patterns to Montage voices while playing live or for jamming?
Thanks
From the HOME screen of your Performance you can add a Drum Kit Part as long as a slot 2-8 has a “+” meaning you can “merge” another Performance with the current data.
Touch an available slot “+” to open the “Performance Merge” Search screen and ADD a new KBD CTRL Part.
KBD CTRL will activate (green) indicating this Part will be under the control when touch the Keys.
Touch “Drum/Perc”
Select a Drum Kit with a name that describes the general category you desire. If you want HipHop grooves, Select a Kit with HipHop in the name, if you want Jazz, or Rock, choose an appropriately named Kit.
This will assign the Drum Kit to the Part and activate its Arp. The Part Arp Switch (blue) switches On
Press [SHIFT] + the blue “Arp On” Part option in the screen to set the Arp to “Hold” (amber)
Press the main [ARP ON/OFF] button to activate the Arpeggiators for the Performance. Both the Main Arp and Part Arp must be activated for an Arp to play when triggered. “Hold” allows it to play without you holding down the keys.
You now can use the bottom row of 8 right hand buttons labeled “Arp Select 1-8” to move between different Arp Phrases assigned to this Kit. The front panel button are “Arp Select 1-8” when [PERFORMANCE CONTROL] is lit brightly.
You can now select (substitute) Arp Phrases of your choosing to the individual Arp Select numbers. Arp Phrases are assigned to the Part by going to that Part’s EDIT > “Arpeggio” > “Individual”.... here you can see the Arp Phrases assigned to the eight Arp Select button.
You can select an Arp Select and then use Arpeggio [CATEGORY SEARCH]
Works like regular Category Search (except now in purple) searching the 10,239 Arp Phrases.
Use the Main, SubCategory and other search tools to define your search.
In general, Arp names follow a kind of code...
MA, MB, MC and MD as a prefix denote a “Main” groove with the second letter indicating complexity A simple, D complex.
FA, FB, FC, etc as a prefix denote a “Fill In” with the second letter indicating complexity.
IA, etc is an Intro.
BA etc is a Break.
EA etc is an Ending.
These designations are only suggestions. You can use any Arp Phrase for any purpose.
Thank you Phil for the amazing reply, very helpful. With all due respect, this seems like a fairly tedious process, maybe it's easier after you do it a few times.
The first time, as with anything, is strange. The second and third time it’s easier and easier because you know what you're doing and what you’re looking at. And like learning to tie your shoes, it looks more complicated when written out, than it actually is... in reality it’s extremely easy.
