Loving my shiny new white Montage 7 so far. As a teen in the 80's I love the old DX7 sounds and have already converted and loaded the original DX7 ROMs into my Montage. There are soooo many DX7 banks available though, and it seems that many have the same sound, or close variations, so I'm hoping that someone could recommend some DX7 banks that are a little extra special?

Thanks!

You’ve got that right!
Hi, welcome to YamahaSynth!

There are tons and tons of classic 6-Operator sounds... with just the originals you have lots to work with... Being a long time DX programmer, it’s startling to hear again some of the sounds that had such a big influence on music. And then how starkly naked they sound, because you did not have effect processing built in to synthesizers back then. (Not to mention Filters, additional Spectral Wave shapes, etc., etc.)

The 6-Op sounds that you import each contain two inactive Operators that you can put to work. Be careful about just amassing tons of DX sounds — there are thousands. They will all need to be tweaked, they cry out for it, because the MONTAGE FM-X Engine has so many new tools available.

There are a three FM-X tutorial article series here in the site. Both for those just getting started with programming FM, and one each for the intermediate and more advanced programmers.

For a guide to the tutorial articles please see this handy resource of links:

The "FM-Xperience" Montage Library by Easy Sounds is a good one to have!
Check out this video by Dom Sigalas who demos the sounds from that library:

Also, check out my post on this forum via the link below. Sometimes FM-X sounds can/need to be greatly enhanced to sound fuller/bigger, and on the DX7II, 'Unison' is what what used for this (layering & detuning each layer). There are a couple of effects on the Montage that do the same thing, only better in some cases:
"Symphonic" & "Pitch Change" effects for 'Unison'

FM-Xperience is a amazing sound bank for Montage and MODX, you need to have it.

To complete it you can also go to Barb & Co and check for Deep-X :

I have release one first video with some performances screen record from Audition Demo that Yvo the sound designer done :

Sean:

Like you, I’m also a fan of FM. If you want a good collection of classic FM sounds that have been programmed well, I recommend the Olszak pack:

Also, DX7 selection in the Montage Expanded library has all the classic stuff. Both there libraries are free. Also, both these libraries have non FM stuff as well that I don’t need, so I used the Melas tools to filter out all stuff I don’t want to save on memory. I agree with the comments above, FM-Xperience is great as well.

Cheers.

Where can I get the Olszak pack? Is there somewhere to download it? I did not see any links in the Video other than going to the Yamaha Europe Site.
