I was wondering if the Montage can get that real analog synth sound like Saw, Pulse, Triangle etc., just like a true analog synth like the Dave Smith REV 2 etc?

Thanks!

The MONTAGE is not an analog synth. Analog synthesizers is just one of the categories of instrument emulations that the MONTAGE does.
The MONTAGE is not an acoustic piano. Acoustic piano is just one of the categories of instrument emulations that the MONTAGE does.
The MONTAGE is not an organ, it’s not an electric nor acoustic guitar, it’s not a string orchestra, it’s not a bass, it’s not a drum set, ... I think you get the idea. Can it do everything each of these instruments do? no, of course not.

But could I reproduce the CS80 sound used in Blade Runner so that a listener would swear that it’s nailed, why, yes, absolutely.
Does that make the MONTAGE a CS80? Well, no. But you could say the same about the piano sound, the guitar sounds, the cowbell sound, for goodness sake...

“Behavior” is going to be different because the way the sound is generated is necessarily different. Voltage Control versus Sample playback and Frequency Modulation.

If I recorded (sampled) your Voice and created a MONTAGE Waveform that played your speaking voice when I touched the key, all your friends would swear that you’ve been nailed, does that make the MONTAGE “James”? I think not, just an incredible emulation of James’ sound saying a specific thing.

Now, that out of the way. You can to an uncanny degree emulate the sound of hundreds of different instruments. You can pick from source Waveforms of almost every classic synth that ever walked the planet... and with FM-X you can build Waveforms that can actually capture some of the synthy behaviors (better than sample tech).

And you have to play the opposite game can the analog synth you mention do an acoustic piano, a Tone Wheel organ, a convincing acoustic guitar, a James’ Speaking Voice sound, a string orchestra sound, a cowbell, a drum set? Hmmm!

Do you own a MONTAGE yet? If so we can give some Performances to explore...

Yes... I own a Montage 8. I was just asking if the Montage can "Get" not "Be" an analog synth. I think you explained that in great detail Bad Mister 😉

And I KNOW the Montage is not an analog synth like the Dave Smith Prophet Rev2 😀 All I wanted to now is if the Montage can "Get" that same type of analog synth sound using it's wav samples like the OB SAW wave etc. 🙂

I would say absolutely, but not by stumbling on it. I found some ol FM articles, that coached me on a few key attributes to tweak, and how they impact the sound. And from my opinion, you can sound as analog as you want if you work on it....., and can do much more with the wave forms with FM synth.... but you gotta get under the covers. Im just learning but I stumbled on some amazing sounds...., I dont know what Im doing yet. I think you gotta get the basic science, and follow some basic patch... and see how the bad a** factory people put them together.... I have found the coaching provided by Bad Mister tremendously valuable to learning the basics of FM-X. Im loving the journey

Buy a Behringer Deep Mind 12 module for cheap and transform your Montage. I have 2 of them.

Can this synthesizer do things that Montage FM-X can't do?

Most all synths are different - and can do unique things others cannot. The Deep Mind can do true analog - that's the top line difference. Search for demo videos and you'll see more. Modulated PWM with real-time control. Different (finer control) over envelopes - such as curve shapes, a post-release phase, etc. It's a totally different instrument and probably a decent complement for a relatively inexpensive analog (poly) synth with lots of options/control.

I wouldn't say it transforms Montage - rather complements Montage. Although perhaps you can route Montage in/out of Deep Mind - I haven't looked at that side of it.

Current Yamaha Synthesizers: Montage Classic 7, Motif XF6, S90XS, MO6, EX5R
