I have a question about Channel Aftertouch.
I thought Channel Aftertouch only applied to the MIDI channel that is used for the part, but that's not how it works.
In my performance I have 3 parts that are activated with Keyboard Switch. Channels 3, 4 and 5, all channels are internal
In channel 5 I added Ch. Aftertouch to an ANX sound (via Mod /Control > Control Assign).
The keys are split as follows:
- Left: MIDI Channel 5 (with ANX with Ch. Aftertouch) from C-2 to A#2
- Right: MIDI Channel 3 + 4 are split from B2 to the end
If I play the keys left (Ch5) and also right (Ch3+4) and press the keys on the right (aftertouch), it triggers the aftertouch on the left. The same thing happens if the zones are split accordingly.
What is "Channel" Aftertouch useful for if it is NOT ONLY applied to the midi channel it is assigned to?
Channel aftertouch on (just about) every keyboard made has a single sensor across the entire keyboard which produces the aftertouch value. This is hardware implemented. It doesn't matter if you press the lowest key or highest key or any key between. Any key will produce the single aftertouch value. If you're pressing two keys into the channel aftertouch sensor then the channel aftertouch will end up being the greatest of the two. Splits are not "respected" because any key regardless of the split it "sits" in will induce a channel aftertouch value.
You can't keyboard zone channel aftertouch messages. All you can do is, for each Part, observe or ignore channel aftertouch altogether.

Thanks a lot, Jason.
So I have misunderstood the meaning of Channel Aftertouch. I thought it would belong to a MIDI Channel.

Aftertouch, both channel and Poly, are at the keyboard level.
The TWO aspects to it can be confusing
#1 - how it affects what happens ON the instrument
#2 - how it affects what MIDI messages get sent FROM the instrument
On the Utility -> Settings -> Sound tab there is a selection for 'AT MIDI Out'. You have
three options: Off, Channel, Poly
The option you select on that screen controls what type of aftertouch messages, if any, are sent FROM the instrument.
That option is totally distinct from the option of Channel or Poly you select for use ON the instrument. You can set the instrument to 'Channel' but still send 'Poly' Midi messages on the M8X keybed.
Or you can set the instrument to Poly but send Channel midi messages.
Use a MIDI monitor (e.g. MIDI-OX) and play around with the settings and you can see what is being sent.
