How would I set it up so that the clock speed of both synths are driven by the Cubase DAW?

Thank you for starting your own thread.

You need to have the following Driver installed on your computer:
For the MONTAGE - Yamaha Steinberg USB Driver
(If you need help in locating or installing the driver, please let us know what type of computer and what operating system you are running on your computer). You will connect a 5-pin MIDI cable between the MONTAGE MIDI Out and the MO6 MIDI In. And a second cable between the MO6 MIDI Out and the MONTAGE MIDI In.

To have Cubase become master clock:
Go to TRANSPORT > PROJECT SYNCHONIZATION SETTINGS... > MIDI CLOCK OUT > DESTINATION > place a mark next to "Yamaha MONTAGE-1" (Port 1) and next to "Yamaha MONTAGE-3" (Port 3).

To slave the MONTAGE to Cubase you can either select a "QUICK SETUP" for recording MIDI... Quick Setup #1 "MIDI Rec on DAW" if you are recording MIDI; Quick Setup #2 "Arp Rec on DAW" both of these templates will set the MONTAGE to slave to MIDI clock.

Or you can set the Sync parameter directly by going to [UTILITY] > "Settings" > "MIDI I/O" > "MIDI SYNC" = MIDI

To slave the MO6 to Cubase you can do so as follows:
Press [UTILITY]
Press [F5] MIDI
Press [SF3]
MIDI SYNC = MIDI
Set SEQ CTRL = In

You set the Tempo in Cubase, MIDI Clock will arrive at each instrument.
Any track set to MONTAGE-3 will reach the MO6
Any track set to MONTAGE-1 will reach the MONTAGE

If you set the Track Inspector for MIDI In = ALL MIDI INPUTS... and you set LOCAL CONTROL = OFF, you can play either keyboard as a controller. In Cubase, go to DEVICES > DEVICE SETUP > MIDI > in the column marked "In All Midi Inputs" place a mark next to the two controllers: "MONTAGE-1" and "MONTAGE-3"

The Cubase Track Inspector MIDI Out can be set to whatever device and channel you wish to trigger.

Everything rockin now :). I am liking how I can rough stuff out with the USB...., using both keyboards if I like. Then I can put stuff down to midi and or audio as needed. I can tweak the performances now to make them more useful to how I am playing the performances. I like to play left hand bass with drum arps and guitar arps.... playing with the motion sequences I can see how I can make some pretty rhythmic dynamics... but I need to play play play to figure out how to make that work for me especially with the FM stuff. (which is new to me... but I like how the math works, like physics somehow).

How about a hint... on when taking a part of a performance that has an arp.... and then not being able to turn the arp off and play the bass say manually... some times it works..sometimes not... so I just add a new bass track and mute the original bass arp. Decontructing these performances is going to take some time :p

Quick hint on what I am missing on the voices that wont play manually without out arps?

Having this forum is really providing a giant head start on getting the most of the Montage, I am really enjoying the journey. It sounds and plays just awesome (61).

PS Should I create a new string on ARP Bass parts that wont play unarpped 🙂

The parameter is called "Arp Play Only". If set to On, the Part will only play in response to Arpeggio Input.

Press [EDIT]
Press the [PART SELECT] button
Touch "Common" in the lower left of the screen
Touch "Arpeggio" > "Common"

Find "Arp Play Only" set it to Off.
