I am using Rock Stereo Kit 1 in a Performance. I’ve noticed that the HH Close waveform plays all the way to the right, even though the Pan setting for it is R2. I suspect this means that the waveform is intrinsically panned all the way to the right.

Am I correct in this assumption? Why would a waveform itself be panned instead of panning it via the Pan setting?

When you recall a Drum Kit Part that is a Stereo Kit or any instrument Part that is sampled with stereo miking, you will hear the natural panorama picked up by the stereo microphone setup. The panning of the Kit as a stereo entity involves the principal Drums of the Kit in question: between Notes C1 and B2
Kick C1, Snare D1, Hihats F#1, G#1, A#1, etc

Traditionally, in the modern stereo era, pop and rock drums are often positioned in the mix so that the listener is facing the stage - placing the hihats to the right, high Tom to the right, lower toms, floor Tom panned across the field going toward the left… etc.

If you wish to override this recorded stereo image and wish to place the individual sounds elsewhere, you must turn the “Element Pan” = On
From the HOME screen > [EDIT] > select the Part with the Drum Kit > touch “Common” lower left corner > “Part Settings” > “General” > when “Element Pan” = On, (green active) you are free to override the factory panning and place the sounds as you prefer.

If Element Pan is Off (grey = inactive) the factory default Stereo imaging will apply. (This applies to any of the Instrument Parts utilizing “St” (stereo) Waveforms.

Hope that helps

I just tried this out with Element Pan = On. Using headphones, the HH Closed Rock Sw St (F#1) waveform can indeed be panned from left to right, but it sounds centered at L26, not at pan setting C. It is definitely to the right at pan setting C.

I guess the stereo panorama is there intrinsically in the waveforms, and the Element Pan setting is there to allow you to adjust that stereo panorama. I had thought that perhaps the waveforms would all default to being centered, but that clearly is not the case.

correct. Those Waveforms not designated with the suffix “St” default to being centered. The advantage of providing certain instruments sampled in true stereo is available… Acoustic Piano, Strings, Drum Kits… you can narrow the panarama.

Extra Credit More on Stereo/Mono
Take the “Monaural Grand” — a single Part, 8 Element, Mono version of the Full Concert Grand (utilizes “Mn” versions of the CF3)
With the Part Common “Element Pan” = On, each Element can be panned as you desire. Using the Element “Pan Scaling” = +63, places the low notes left and as you climb the scale, the notes will move to the right in the mix.

Element Pan is found as an Element parameter under Amplitude/Pan
Scaling is the adjustment across the scale low-to-high. Positive values Send low notes left, Negative values do the opposite.
