I was checking out the various options for Fender Rhodes pianos and noticed the different Element waveforms being used for various 'Rd xxx' Performances.
Some use 'Rd xxx' waveforms, while others use 'EP1, EP3, EP4 xxxx, etc.'
I presume that the 'Rd xxx' waveforms are actual sampled Fender Rhodes Pianos, is this correct?
But what about the 'EP' waveforms? Are any of those samples of Fender Rhodes pianos as well, or are they samples of Yamaha or other 'non-Fender' Electric Pianos?
I don't know what was sampled in the past - but the previous Motif series (looking at Motif ES) had the "EP1" through "EP3" samples so I think EP vs Rd is mostly a generational gap where older waveforms are carried over for backwards compatibility and use the "EP" samples where newer ones with more detail and "character" use the "Rd" samples. A complaint I had about my Motif ES series keyboard was how overly "pristine" the EP (Rhodes) was. I couldn't get any bark or character from it. However, some really like this style -- so both are available to you.
I think both are Rhodes but one has more post-production to remove much of the "character" and the other is more detailed and has some of what would otherwise be considered "imperfections" in the sound at different velocity layers.
Current Yamaha Synthesizers: Montage Classic 7, Motif XF6, S90XS, MO6, EX5R

Kool, thanks!
So, after checking through the Presets, I found 2 Performances that sounded the closest to the Fender Rhodes piano that was played on the song 'Get Back' by The Beatles in 1969. ('Rd 2 Gallery' & 'Case 75 Medium')
- Rd 2 Gallery - uses 'Rd Hard x' Elements/waveforms
- Case 75 Medium - uses 'EP4 x' Elements/waveforms
As @Jason mentioned, the Rd Hard Element waveforms do have more detail, character, and authenticity; However the EP4 Element waveforms had the exact same tone as the Rhodes used in 'Get Back', where as the Rd Hard ones were not quite as close. As much as I tried to EQ & shape the Rd Hard Element waveforms, I could not get them as close as the EP4 ones. There are just certain core frequencies & harmonic overtones that the EP4 waveforms naturally have that match the Get Back piano.
So I basically combined the two Performances, whereby I used the 'EP4' Elements for the main sound of the piano, EQ'ing/tweaking them to be nearly identical to the Get Back Rhodes, and I then used the 'Rd' Elements for all the remaining KeyOff and KeyNoise waveforms, keeping it all within a single PART in the end.
Here are the Elements I am using in the combined PART:
'EP4 p'
'EP4 mp'
'EP4 mf'
'EP4 f'
'Rd Hard KeyOff'
'Rd KeyNoise p'
'Rd KeyNoise mf'
'Rd KeyOff mf' (although I kept the volume down quite a bit on this element, as I wanted this physical key sound to be more subtle)
Thought I'd share in case someone else is looking to do 'Get Back' or another song that has the same sounding Rhodes piano! 😉
Thanks for sharing the details. That's the sort of 'extra effort' that really helps understand what you are doing. Jason is good at doing that also.
Np, I learned early on in this forum from BM & Jason, that being specific and using the correct wording really helps people in understanding the Montage.
Also, I appreciate when others provide the extra details, so I like to pay it forward whenever I can in hopes that it helps others.
Someone at some point might do a google search for "Montage Fender Rhodes Piano" or "Montage Get Back Piano Sound", then have this post show in their search results, and hopefully find it helpful! 😉
