Every single time I have to go thru alll the settings. I am wasting at least 15 minutes before I can finally record...often I give up in sheer frustration. This is the only software I have ever encountered that does not remember ANY settings, or just remembers them at random rather. Sometimes project sync is still set up, the next time it´s all gone. All the audio ports of the montage are systematically gone, as well as Montage being the Midi instrument... I mean, what am I doing wring here, this cannot be right to have tgo thru ALL basic settings each time you launch Cubase.
Now with the remote setup one more, which was of course all gone after I have gone thru it according to instructions, and now that I try set it up again the Montage will not stop playing anymore...

please...this is an unbearable situation that takes all the fun out of homerecording!

We’ll start this answer off with an old vaudeville routine:
A gentleman is standing under a corner street lamp late at night, scouring the ground for a lost object.
Policeman: Can I help you?
Gentleman: I dropped my keys and I can’t find them.
Policeman: when did you drop them?
Gentleman: Oh, about a block ago...
Policeman: Then why are you looking here?
Gentleman: The light is better here!

If you are looking for information on how to get Steinberg Cubase to memorize your setup, it has really not much to do with the keyboard you use. It is clearly a question for your MySteinberg Account. Forgive my little story, but I just wanted to make the point without just telling you you’re wrong... (you’re looking at the MONTAGE instead of the software). Steinberg Cubase has ways that you can store all of your own preferences and it should recall them exactly as you design the workflow.

One of the problems with any startup guide is... everyone’s setup is slightly different. If you expressed the same sentiment to Steinberg support, they might be thrown by why you are blaming or expecting the Keyboard you are using to make a difference. The keyboard in this instance could be anything - once configured.

But since the light is better here (because you are more comfortable posting here) we can/will attempt to help you. But unfortunately you did not provide us with anything but the complaint...what is “Project sync” in your workflow. Are you having problems with MONTAGE CONNECT running inside of Cubase? Is that the “Sync” you are referring to

You have a series of “New Project” Templates when you open Cubase.
You have three (3) Quick Setup Templates in MONTAGE.

There are two (2) Cubase Templates for the MONTAGE. Start with these, then as you develop your own workflow follow the instruction (Operation Manual) on how to customize and create your own... name it “Gabi’s MONTAGE Setup”

For example, if you select the Factory MONTAGE “Quick Setup” #3 “Audio Rec on DAW” you must customize the MONTAGE “PART OUTPUTs” to meet your specific needs. This MONTAGE setup template assigns each Part to its own USB stereo pair. If that is not what you want, then you can (same as with Cubase) CUSTOMIZE it to suit your needs. (We go over this in the tutorial article).

It is the user’s responsibility to customize the setups as you desire. We, as always will be happy to assist. (Not that we are Steinberg Support) but we can help you with any specific MONTAGE issues you might run into... And we can get you started with your Cubase Setup.

If you would like, please, provide the following:
Computer type
Computer Operating System
Version of Cubase
Any other gear you wish to include in your configuration (and how it is connected).

The concept is have a setup for when you create a NEW PROJECT.
One for MIDI recording, another for Audio recording.
Select it, and begin your session.

When complete, SAVE your Project in a state so that when next you open it, all you need do is: open, and hit the Spacebar to play!
It, literally, should be all you do. Open, Play! Literally!

Once you get this down, it will cease to be an issue. (Completely).

Let us know.

Do you have Montage Connect set up as a VST instrument? Make sure to have the latest Yamaha MIDI driver installed before doing anything, then after opening Cubase, add Montage Connect as a VST instrument. Then, configure all of the settings in Cubase and Montage back to where you had them, then save the project. It should save all of your settings at that point.

If Montage Connect is part of the clues to solve this mystery - then it's not only a matter of lighting as Cubase leveraging any "3rd party" to remember settings is not representative of "any keyboard". The settings requested help saving may or may not be related to Montage Connect - but, if they are, then this would be more of a "Montage thing" than a general Cubase usage question.

I know templates mentioned here are more for training wheels - but again, that's not a keyboard-agnostic suggestion where the folks at Steinberg would be best suited to cover.

That said - it's not all-or-nothing. I think having the question open here with Montage-specific guidance helps and simultaneously learning the Cubase built-in features which are keyboard agnostic (with another thread/ticket on their support site) would be beneficial.

well, when I first started with Cubase and ran into issues I was told the Montage templates are designed for Cubase pro, which I do not have, (they have for example a sysex track that I cannot use, as far as I can remember...haven´t opened such a template in 2 years, so...)
so I always use a completely empty template.
so my version of Cubase is Elements 9 with windows 7.
yes, Cubase remembers settings from recorded projects but everytime I want to record a new song I have to go thru all these settings again.... why?
by project sync I mean cubase synchronizing with montage.
and no, it´s not a Montage connect issue, I never use it, I just write down the sound for the song.

Because you have yet to make a Setup Template for how you like to work.

Here’s specifically why: “so I always use a completely empty template.”
Create one that serves your purpose. That’s it.
The “Empty” template is no help at all, it’s for when you want to manually setup each and every time you create a New Project. (Two years of doing that can get very old...)

When you don’t create one then you have to start all over again every time. This will not change until you create your own template.
Again: The concept is have a setup for when you create a NEW PROJECT.
One for MIDI recording, another for Audio recording.
Select it, and begin your session

Which one would you prefer to tackle first?

by project sync I mean cubase synchronizing with montage.
and no, it´s not a Montage connect issue, I never use it, I just write down the sound for the song.

You should really use MONTAGE CONNECT. It runs completely in the background, nothing for you to do but set it up (once) and let it “write down the sound for the song” for you!

not really used to this, all my previous software, may it be for audio or video editing, just remembered the hardware settings once and for all, regardless of whatever project template, so I didn´t even think this matters because I am used to set up my hardware once and never deal with it ever again. why Cubase is not capable of this... oh well...I´ll make a template....and hopefully this will now once and for all rememebr the bloody settings for the Monty????

Cubase will remember any template you configure for Cubase itself, but you'll need to use Montage Connect in order for the Cubase project to open up and have the Montage configure itself to your last saved project state. You just need to install Montage Connect and load it in Cubase as an instrument plugin. It's easy and it works great.

are you sure I need Montage Connect? as far as I know Montage Connect is for remembering performances. Why would it have anything to do with midi, audio, sync and remote control settings? as far as I remember Montage Connect didn´t even exist at the time when the first Cubase Montage lessons came out. So those had to work without Montage Connect. And I would think the basic hardware settings had to be remembered back then, in those early days, without Montage connect.

Well, from what I can tell with my own Cubase projects Montage Connect saves the performance state of Montage without having to save it on the Synth itself. I still save the Performance on the Montage itself as a precaution though in case Cubase crashes, which might happen sometimes.

@Fess: Correct!! (but it's the computer that crashes). You can run MONTAGE CONNECT completely in the background, when you open a Project, you can immediately click the space bar to "Play" easy-peazy!

@Gabi

are you sure I need Montage Connect?

Yes.

and hopefully this will now once and for all rememebr the bloody settings for the Monty????

There is no "hopefully"... is it that you do not believe us, or is it that you are not understanding the role of MONTAGE CONNECT?

Either way, do you know how to create the Template? We have offered to help...

Hi Bad Mister, so what do need Montage connect for, regarding hardware settings? Why was everything supposed to work with Cubase before Montage connect came out then? curious....
yes, I can save a template. we´ll see if that does the trick....

Just focusing on the Montage Connect side of this ...

I see part of this thread as an opportunity to evaluate if the general Montage user has the resources they need to accomplish a task using the tools (such as Montage Connect) provided. There are all sorts of approaches to solving problems in the studio - so a certain part of this population is going to want to understand, at least at a high level, how the system works and how the tools will solve their problem. It's also an opportunity for the OP to review what is available and see if any of this material helps illuminate some of the gaps. It's entirely possible that there may be gaps in the documentation itself. It would be interesting to learn there what/where/how of these gaps and fill them as appropriate.

I've tried to collect as many of the Montage Connect resources as are available. One critique I can make is that the Montage Connect manual that is distributed inside Montage Connect (MONTAGE_Connect_Manual_en.pdf) deserves a spot in the "Manuals" section of the Montage downloads ( https://usa.yamaha.com/products/music_production/synthesizers/montage/downloads.html ) as some users may want to be able to get a concise document which details Montage Connect without searching the net.

Here's a list of SOME of the available material:

General intro
https://www.yamahasynth.com/montage-category/montage-connect

Focus on arps
https://yamahasynth.com/montage-category/montage-connect-ii

Covers Cubase Pro 9 and how built-in templates will automate backing up/restoring a setup to using Montage Connect for the current Cubase project.
https://www.yamahasynth.com/montage-category/montage-and-cubase-pro-9-workflow

Using Montage Connect as a "bridge" between Montage internal Songs (MIDI files) and your DAW (Cubase demonstrated):
https://www.yamahasynth.com/montage-category/montage-os-v2-5-arp-record

https://www.yamahasynth.com/montage-category/connecting-montage-and-logic-pro-x

https://www.yamahasynth.com/montage-category/montage-os-v2-5-using-the-new-daw-remote-feature-in-cubase

AND ... download Montage Connect and read the manual inside the ZIP file (referenced above) ...
https://usa.yamaha.com/products/music_production/synthesizers/montage/downloads.html

Primarily, what I get out of reviewing some of the material is that you can save a Performance setup on Montage Connect and "auto sync" will recall that setting.

I found the Cubase 9 Pro link (3rd in list of available material) to be most useful for my own understanding:

... What you need to know is that whenever you SAVE the Cubase Project, MONTAGE Connect will "request" and capture the current conditions within your Performance. This is intended to be used to restore the initial start condition of your mixing settings - the Motion Control Engine invites changes across many different parameters - the "initial condition" needs to be captured as a "snapshot" so that all parameters start from the position to which you have set them for the start of the composition. As you can imagine, it's a type of "reset" - but not just for MW, PB, FC and the usual physical controllers but for every possible parameter in the entire Motion Control Synth Engine!

If you do not use Cubase 9 Pro (and perhaps cannot use the Montage Templates supplied - because perhaps a different version doesn't have these templates - I use AI - so I do not think these templates are available) - then the more general guide (the 1st link in the list of available material) gives guidance on how to start creating your own template:

After launching connecting MONTAGE to a USB port on the computer and installing the MONTAGE Connect VST3 plug-in, launch Cubase and create an empty Project.

There are two ways to add the MONTAGE Connect app. The preferred way is as a VST Instrument Track. This adds MONTAGE Connect as an Instrument Track. Right-click in the Cubase track area in the main Project window and select "Add Instrument Track ..." select "MONTAGE Connect under "Synth" and click "Add Track":

Even though the Connect plug-in is listed under "Synth" it is NOT a "virtual instrument". With a virtual instrument this would also provide a single MIDI channel and stereo out but this is not operational in the MONTAGE Connect plug-in because it is not a virtual instrument but rather a control VST for the MONTAGE hardware.

A second way is the as a VST Instrument "Rack" component: Go to DEVICES > VST INSTRUMENTS > listed under Synths click on "Montage Connect". If asked to create a MIDI track answer "Yes". This allows MONTAGE Connect to appear in a "rack" of other VST instruments and creates a folder with lanes for automation and audio routing but for the same reasons listed above this functionality is not operational.

NOW ... if any of this information helps you - then I do not think this is necessarily a case of "RTFM". It's fair to look at what information is available - how difficult (or easy) it is to find. How the information is organized to answer questions a new user may have - etc.

In my opinion, if you couldn't open up the PDF supplied with Montage Connect (hopefully copied to the download "manuals" section as well eventually) and understand all you needed to know about how Montage was going to solve your save/recall issue - then that document may not yet be sufficient.

Bad Mister, so what do need Montage connect for, regarding hardware settings?

If by hardware, you are referring to the MONTAGE, MONTAGE CONNECT memorizes your Performance. It also restores that Performance to the Edit Buffer of your instrument, automatically, upon opening the Cubase Project.

Sure you could store the Performance in your MONTAGE and then manually recall it using either the MONTAGE front panel, or you could insert a Bank Select and Program Change so that MIDI events contained within your sequence data recalls your Performance. But reading your issues, it comes down to you having to do a setup every time you want to do something with MONTAGE that is frustrating you.

Anyway, let us know... make sure you include MONTAGE CONNECT as a part of your Cubase Template... set it up once, and it will be there automatically every time you launch your Template
