It only looks as though it returns to Standalone, while in fact, the last template you selected is still in play.
If you which to change the QUICK SETUP, simply touch the option you want.

Selecting a TEMPLATE (IMHO) without knowing exactly what that template does is going to cause strange behavior. Because by not knowing what you are opting in for is a sure way to be surprised with the result.

Lets talk about what changes selecting "AUDIO REC ON DAW" makes from the "STAND ALONE" condition you would be in when playing the Montage without a computer.

When you select AUDIO REC ON DAW - the factory default settings make the following changes:
LOCAL CONTROL = remain ON _ In an audio record situation, you are likely to be playing the keyboard at some point and you want it to output audio
DIRECT MONITOR = OFF _ The connection between the Montage Tone Generator and the Main L&R OUTPUTS is broken, all audio routing is determined in the DAW
OUTPUT SELECT = PART 1 = Main L&R
PART 2 = USB 1&2
PART 3 = USB 3&4
PART 4 = USB 5&6
PART 5 = USB 7&8
PART 6 = USB 9&10
PART 7 = USB 11&12
PART 8 = USB 13&14
PART 9 = USB 15&16
PART 10 = USB 17&18
PART 11 = USB 19&20
PART 12 = USB 21&22
PART 13 = USB 23&24
PART 14 = USB 25& 26
PART 15 = USB 27&28
PART 16 = USB 29&30
and
ARP OUT = OFF

That is the template you selected. It applies these changes to your currently selected PERFORMANCE. If you change to a different PERFORMANCE, most likely it is assigned to MAIN L&R for all PARTS. If you select a FACTORY PERFORMANCE that is for sure. If you select one of your USER PERFORMANCES whatever OUTPUT SELECTION you have STORED will naturally be recalled.

So yes you need to reapply a QUICK SETUP (that why they are 'quick' and not 'permanent' setups) - you are selecting conditions for recording at that moment.

If you cannot move, change or select some feature on the Montage due to your MIDI configuration, then you likely have the wrong configuration for what you are attempting to do... at that moment. What are you attempting to do?

Normal behavior (ie, correct behavior) would be you are able to document everything you wish to record to your MIDI track. Again, knowing the exact settings made by the template you select will help you understand what is going on - see REFERENCE MANUAL on QUICK SETUPs.

I just took my fresh install of Cubase (see https://www.yamahasynth.com/forum/montage-as-control-surface-for-vsti-s/latest#filter-sort ), changed the "MIDI 01" output from the MIDI Monitor to MONTAGE-1. The input for the track was already MONTAGE-1 from the previous setup.

So I pressed record - pressed scene change buttons at slow/fast pace - hit stop - then rewind/played back the track to the keyboard - and the scene change buttons worked. This is not surprising since SysEx is sent during a scene change and this message is saved by the MIDI recorder of Cubase. It's what it does.

Alternatively, the on-board MIDI record, for me, does let me record scene changes. I'm not sure if they restricted this with later firmware like performance changing is restricted (locked out) on all firmware versions.

I should have been clearer in my question. If you've switched from the "Audio Rec on DAW", I'm assuming you know to do that in order to Record MIDI. You can choose one of the other two Quick Setups (both of which are MIDI specific setups):

Quick Setup 1: "MIDI Rec on DAW" - use this when recording ordinary playing of the keyboard, this will document all MIDI activity
Quick Setup 2: "Arp Rec on DAW" - use this when recording MIDI which includes arpeggio data. This will ensure Parts with active Arps send that data Out via MIDI, Parts without will be recorded normally.

In both instances [SCENE] changes will be documented. Make sure your DAW is set handle System Exclusive (Sysex) data. Many DAWs (including Cubase) come with this option filtered. In Cubase this is set under Cubase Preferences > MIDI > MIDI Filter. You want to be able to record Sysex messages as "Scene" events are not a standard MIDI command, but very much a Yamaha system exclusive message.

Remember when recording Multi Parts (MIDI) to set the receiving MIDI Track to "Any" so that data is received and echoed back on the channel on which it arrives. System Exclusive data and Super Knob cc messages are documented on Channel 1.
