Is a USB flash drive essential for installing firmware updates or can I install it through the usb connection from the montage to the computer? Thanks

The firmware update file must be placed on a USB stick in the root directory.
You must power on the unit holding the described buttons.
No exceptions.
and no that can't be fixed in a firmware update ...:)
