Is it possible to change the part (sound) of a performance without changing the arp or effects?

Hi there,

I've been doing some tests recording simple arps and automations into Cubase and everything seems to be working ok. Now, I'd like to try editing existing preset performances and use sounds, arps and effects of my choosing; I want to change the voice and keep the same arp to start and then maybe try different effects. Can I un-link a sound from an arp so when I change the sound the arp stays the same?

Yes you can. Use the "Param with Part" feature while in PART category search. Here's a learning experiment:

1) Use performance category search (not to PART category search yet) - Press [PERFORMANCE] (HOME) to get you oriented, then press [CATEGORY SEARCH]. Tap on the magnifying glass and type "90s Harp". Make sure the main category is "All" (far left, tap on the "All" square) so it shows up. Last, press [ENTER] to select and return to the home screen

2) Make sure the [ARP ON/OFF] button is illuminated (amber). It's one button away from your Scene 1 blue button. Press it if it's off.

3) Press a key or some keys. You'll see there's a "round robin" pattern going from the lowest note to the highest note then back down to the lowest note and over and over again. This is the ARP. Pretend like you love this ARP and don't want to change it.

4) Press PART 1 on the touch screen (you should still be at [PERFORMANCE] (HOME) ) - you could touch the "90s harp" (small text, not big text at the top which is the performance name) which is to the right of the word "Name". On the far left of the screen, you'll see a grey menu appear with the top selection as "Search", then edit, then copy, then property. The "Search" - if there was more room to label exactly what this is - would say "PART Category Search". Touch the "Search" selection to bring you to the PART selection category search.

5) Look at the bottom "Param with part". You'll see a box "Arp/MS". If you want to change the PART - but keep the existing ARP (and motion sequence) - then make sure this box is grey and not greenish-blue. Press the box if its not grey.

6) Now pick any other PART - you can be sure that other parts even in the same area do not have the same ARP. After selecting another PART (you can just use the DATA DIAL to scroll through some) - let go of keys and press keys again to retrigger the ARP. When changing the PART - if you continue to hold keys down - Montage is not going to retrigger the ARP (it will stop).

7) You can go back and experiment with Param with Part "Arp/MS" turned on. You'll see the current ARP is replaced by the PART's ARP (the one you have as the target PART which is to replace your current one).

This is the easiest un-link process for ARPs.

There is no "Param with Part" feature for effects.

Here, I would probably do things the hard way and setup InsA+InsB settings that I liked as "favorites" and save them to a SYX file - meaning generate SysEx commands that setup these effects in the "profile" I like with all the settings. Then if I wanted to apply these settings, I would send the SysEx to Montage using the PC. There are different ways to do this (generate 8 SysEx files so you can update any part you want) - or use PART 8 as an "edit" part - and only have the SysEx files target part 8 - then move the part to the correct slot after blasting the effects to Part 8.

I find myself doing something custom every time - so I do not use this workflow. But if I wanted to reuse effects, that's probably how I'd do it today.

There are other ways to do this.

I would only add, that there is no way to unlink a Part from its Effects because the two Insert Effects are as much apart of the instrument PART, as the Filters... the Insert Effects are those that are under realtime control; they are the Effects that give an instrument its personality in many cases.

To understand the difference between the role and routing to the Insert Effects versus the other (System and Master) Effects is important. An example of Insert Effects would be the Damper Resonance effect on an acoustic piano, the Rotary Speaker and Overdrive on a tone wheel organ, the Distortion and Wah-Wah Pedal on an electric guitar, the Auto Pan on a Suitcase Rhodes, and so on.

When you copy or select any Part, it will automatically retain its two Insert Effects because:
_ routing to the Insertion Effect block is located within the architecture that constructs the instrument sound.
_ AWM2 Parts each feature their own 3-band EQ pre the Insertion block and a 2-band EQ post the Insertion block; FM-X Parts feature a 3-band EQ pre the Insertion block and a 2-band EQ post the Insertion block.
_ You can select on a per Element basis or if the Part is FM-X, you can route the Carrier Output to one or the other or both (or neither) of Insert Effects.
_ being able to assign realtime control over the application of the Effect (beyond just amount) is an integral part of the Insert Effects.
They are always with the PART because, they are, literally, apart of the instrument.

Think of the Insertion Effects as those belonging to that musician. They are the personal Effects that only that one instrument is using. Only the piano is using the Damper Resonance, only the organ is using the Rotary Speaker and realtime control lets you change rotating speeds, only the guitar is inserted into the Distortion and Wah pedal, etc.

Think of the other Effects as being the property of the "studio" given access by the mixing console either via your standard Send/Return scenario, or where they all go through the Effect together.

The other Effects (System: Reverb, Variation; Master Effect; and Master EQ) are selected globally for the entire Performance:
_ Each Part (16 synth plus A/D In) has an individual Send amount to the System Effects.
_ All Parts routed to main system Outputs (Main L&R) will travel together through the Master Effect and Master EQ
_ Each of the Parts has access to the Envelope Follower
They are never brought along with an instrument because they belong to "studio"

Summary: while Arps are not apart of the instrument (they are only associated temporarily with any instrument) you can select sounds (Parts) independently from the ARP that is currently associated, the Effects are divided into those that are apart of the instrument, and those that are apart of the mixing console and can be shared by all.

In general, you can decide what gets brought along when you select by opting in or opting out on the "Parameter with Part".
Learning to master the [CATEGORY SEARCH] function will help you greatly. Initially it may seem that Category Search is always the same, but your options change depending on the context of your search.
