What I like in analog engine is not to get the bigger sound but to get expressivity as I have in these softs by Wolfgang palm, phonem and PPG infinite

and animoog by moog

do you think the MontageM analog engine could offer this kind of expressivity  ?

It isn't clear what you mean by 'expressivity'. You probably need to listen to the new AN-X sounds yourself or find an onine demo of them.

Check out the FM Ringmod Fall performance and see if you are talking about that sort of thing.

Yes it can!! 😉

The Montage M is a super powered beast...

I don't have a Montage M and still have the Montage classic, but it can do pretty much everything I heard in all the videos with just the FM-X and AWM2 engines ... And now with the M's new OS 2.00 AN-X Smart Morph feature you can do 'morphing' expressively via AN-X, as they do in some of those videos..!

So, most of it you could do via the AN-X engine and get those levels of expressivity!  A few of the sounds likely would require the AWM2 'choir' type sounds...

The last soundclip for The Cry of the PPG Infinite could be done on the AN-X, FM-X or AWM2 using the right sound + mono + portamento set properly + adding the "Talking Modulator" insert effect & perhaps assigning the 'Vowel' destination to either the Mod Wheel or to an Asgnknob &/or SuperKnob for changing the 'formants' expressively.

With the AN-X you would have all the expressivity you are looking for and perhaps you might also get it to sound more analog as well..!?

Additionally, with the Montage M8x specifically, you would also have more PolyAT expressivity 'per key' as well, if that is something you would want...

the new beast start to be attractive…( but I will have to keep quite a while the loved montage classic) analog sound have plasticity that AWM don’t have because of sampling limitation, bending the notes for exemple can bring artificial sounding.

So you say that the polyAT is more fine in the 88 Mx, that is interesting 🤔 would you have some sources about this  info?

But nothing about polyaftertouch, Pat need a mechanical feedback too…

I didn’t know that pAT is only available for the Mx 8…. if i can afford for a MX8, maybe I can afford for a roady too 🤐

The Montage M8X has a keybed that can produce polyphonic aftertouch as well as play it. All three models (M6, M7, M8X) have sound engines that can play polyAT if MIDI is sent from an external source.

You create control assignments that use the polyAT to manipulate one or more parameters that affect the sound.

Dom has a great video that shows off some of what can be done.

You don't need to get an M8X to get PolyAT.   One option would be to use the ESP plugin with a PolyAT capable MIDI controller (or another full synth with PolyAT) and run the Plugin on a laptop or tablet like a Microsoft Surface.  This is a compelling setup which would allow for significantly reducing the travel weight of your rig.  The market is providing more and more PolyAT options.

It would be super cool if Yamaha released an affordable PolyAT MIDI controller with all of the buttons knobs etc as a Montage M but no screens as a control surface and keybed for pairing with ESP.   And all in a lightweight chassis made of relatively inexpensive materials.

This may never happen, but there are several 3rd party options available today.

For sure you have some solutions for gigg, even the iPad Pro is a not a bad mpe controller if you like sliding on the glass and it have smart mpe app like phonem or ppg infinite and animoog etc… for the time I still avoid to bring computer on stage , I like dedicated boxes in metal if possible . but may be one day. I think the e osmosis keyboard is what I should target, unfortunately I email to them for get some information that I don’t find in their advertising or forums but there are absolutely not responsive so that is not engaging. It is not urgent, for the time,  montage classic and his super knob bring me where I need to go, symphonic music with one keyboard and one player.

At and Pat have the same issue, the mechanical feedback for fingers.

I use AT in montage classic for controlling the volume of violin for give a more natural play but the coarse is so tiny that it is like walking on a string! Thus, for add an extra sound that come and go away in a slow play for give a dramatic emotion, it work quite well, you could do this also with the super knob but mine is already busy.

FYI - the M8X range of movement for aftertouch is pretty small as well and takes some training to be able to produce consistent repetitive action on the same key.
