Hi All,

As I doesn‘t found an Information about my need, I hope, somebody can help me.

I want to have the following configuration :

- Montage connected via USB to my MAC for the possibility to use some effects in Ableton live
- using especially for piano Parts my Arturia Master Keyboard with 88 keys (i have the Montage with 76 keys) the arturia should work like the internal Montage keys (= Single Mode ...)
- my Novation master Keyboard I want to use to play some parts (e.g.drums) on an preconfigured MIDI channel. In a live setup a 2nd Musician would play this Part.

Is there any possibility to configure such a setup on the Montage? It would be a combination of USB and 5 Pin midi mode and a combination of Multi and Single mode.
I fear such a configuration isn‘t possible?

Cheers Jens

MIDI uses the terms “master” and “slave” to describe the device you play and the device or devices you want to control. This includes the Keyboard (transmit/master) and the Tone Generator (receive/slave) of the Synth you are playing. When you have more than one slave there is usually never any issues, when you seek to create multiple “master” devices you are bound to run into impossible situations. Please see the following article for background on the MONTAGE MIDI:

MONTAGE MIDI Settings Explained

The MONTAGE can be setup to use USB for MIDI, instead of the 5-pin MIDI jacks doing nothing, Yamaha allows you to use the MONTAGE as a MIDI interface for an external device via the 5-pin jacks.... from the above mentioned article:

Important Note: If you select MIDI I/O = USB, MONTAGE will send and receive via the USB connection; while the 5-pin MIDI IN/OUT jacks will allow you to connect an external device discreetly to the computer (as Port 3). So it is NOT that the 5-pin MIDI ports don't work when you select MIDI I/O = USB, they work to address one external device (both IN/OUT, to and from the computer). You can trigger that device by looping the signal through the computer: Port 1 In to Port 3 Out.
Most Frequently Asked Question (USB): What generates the most questions is how to play the MONTAGE keys and trigger an external MIDI device (that is connected via 5-pin MIDI cable) all while connected MIDI I/O = USB to the computer. The answer is: literally, through the computer. Here is the MIDI Signal Flow:

- MONTAGE key press, Local Control is Off, MIDI messages go Out via USB on Port 1 to a MIDI Track set to receive MONTAGE Port 1 as MIDI IN.
- Set the Track's MIDI OUT to MONTAGE Port 3.
- Port 3 is the 5-Pin MIDI Out jack that goes to the external synth. So DAW signal routed on Port 3 triggers whatever you connect to the MONTAGE MIDI OUT.
- You can trigger that external keyboard module while connected to your DAW. You simply THRU the data (it passes thru the MONTAGE on PORT 3) - because typically, when working with an external DAW “Local Control” is Off, only if you set the MIDI Track’s Out PORT to 1 will it trigger the MONTAGE tone generator.

USB-MIDI communication also includes bulk data transfers. When the size of the data allows, you can bulk Performance data from your computer, phone or tablet making it convenient to transport your favorites. This communication is handled on Port 1 between the MONTAGE and the “host” device.

Is there any possibility to configure such a setup on the Montage? It would be a combination of USB and 5 Pin midi mode and a combination of Multi and Single mode.
I fear such a configuration isn‘t possible?

I’m not sure what you are trying to do (not clear)... but like a light can’t be Off and On at the same time, the synth can’t be in MULTI and SINGLE mode simultaneously.

While the above describes how you can be in USB communication and still use the 5-pin MIDI jacks. But... By definition, when you are using the MONTAGE to transmit Out via MIDI as a “master” controller, you are in MIDI I/O Mode = Multi
This is so obvious ... you are controlling multiple devices.

Your solution is to understand why the terms “master” and “slave” were used in MIDI in the first place... you need one device to be the master ... all others will take commands from that one device. Look into “Camelot Pro” (I have not gotten my hands on it yet, but when I got a demonstration of it at last Winter’s NAMM show, it showed great promise, particularly for folks, like you, who have too many devices, too many players and not enough connections... lol.

If you have concluded you need the MONTAGE to be a “slave” device, you must treat it as it requires to do “its thing”. If the device you have selected to control it (to be the “master”) if it doesn’t Transmit on enough MIDI channels (which I believe is what you are telling us) then it is not going to be able to handle the MONTAGE properly. If your selected “master” device transmitted on 8 Zones (like the old Motif XS/XF) that would be a situation where you could address the MONTAGE in Multi mode. If your selected “master” device only transmits on one or two Zones, its not rocket science... the MONTAGE in Multi mode will be able to respond to both of those Zones.

If you must place it in Single mode (MIDI I/O Mode = Single) - this means it will transmit Out and receive on a single MIDI Channel.
I believe something like “Camelot Pro” will allow your selected “master” controller’s messages to be duplicated so that you can transmit on enough channels simultaneously to handle the MONTAGE’s requirements. It will become the ONE MASTER for your setup. Please note: I have not done this but the explanation about this program, as I understood it, this is exactly what it’s designed to do. Worth a look, let us know.

Thanks, Bad Mister for the detailed Information!

That helps a lot and I will now check in detail my solution based on your description.
