Montage M DAW mapping

Hey, guys.

Long time Kronos owner and just got the M8k a few days ago to compliment it. Loving it, but of course I'm still in the RTFM stages and getting a feel for the wheel.

I use Cubase 13 Pro, and after setting it up for Mackie Control the transport buttons work exactly as expected when putting the M in DAW mode. What I'm trying to determine at the moment is how to map a few other common transport features, specifically emulating 1 / 2 (go to beginning / end of song), next bookmark, previous bookmark.

The Montage faces the wall in my office, and when recording my back is to my computer keyboard and monitor. The only things I need to do on the M itself are transport and navigation when recording.

I know that the DAW mode is Mackie Control protocol, but I can't find anywhere in the manual where it talks about these particular mappings. I'm sure I could go into Cubase and set up a Midi Remote panel, and it might come to that, but my current assumption is that I just don't understand how to the M's DAW controls yet.

Would be grateful for any insights you might offer.

Thanks,

Chris

Okay, for anyone else who may have this question in the future, here's what I ended up doing.

I couldn't find any particular default integration between the Montage M and Mackie Control regarding next / previous marker, etc. However, the Midi Remote capabilities in Cubase (I believe they became available from Cubase 12 onwards) were very easy to set up, so I just manually created my configuration.

The biggest decision was choosing what buttons on the M to use for this purpose. I didn't want to have competing functionality on the scene buttons, so I ended up using the Part buttons. Button 1, Digital In, appeared to be in use (although I might be mistaken about that) and I only needed six, so I mapped 3 / 4 to begin / end, 5 / 6 to prev / next marker, and 7 / 8 to Nudge Bar -1 / + 1. For those who haven't played with this yet, it's also worth mentioning that I configured the remote panel using Montage Midi in / out 2, which is the port for Mackie Control. Port 1 is for note data, etc.

Everything works as expected in DAW mode. My one concern was that pressing these buttons when not in DAW mode would still move the transport in Cubase. Fortunately, in testing I found that was not the case and the buttons are only active when in DAW mode.

Anyway, very happy with how it worked out. I hope this can be of use to others who want to do similar things with Cubase.

Chris

I couldn't see a way to edit my previous post so I'm leaving this correction for those who might need this in the future.

I had thought buttons 1 and 2 were in use, but it turns out I was mistaken. All 8 work fine. Consequently I was able to set up 1/2 as begin / end, 3/4 as next / prev marker, 5/6 as next / prev bar and 7 / 8 as undo / redo.

Hope this is helpful.

Thanks for taking the time to pass on your findings. That is one of those things that can easily fall through the cracks because if you don't need it you don't even go into that area of the instrument.

I seldom use a DAW so wouldn't have been much help and people that know how to do it, well they know how to do it so don't need to post about it.

Yes, thank you for this very helpful information. Much appreciated!

Seems like you’re marching your way through the M learning curve nicely.

Glad it's useful.

Maybe it's because I have a Kronos and Fantom, but so far the M has been very straightforward to learn since all three share similar concepts. I think they've done a really nice job on the UI.
