Just found out that if you hold a C#2 chord (C#2, F2, G#2) when you turn power on and let the chord go when you see the Yamaha on the screen it goes into test mode.
You can use the data dial you run any of 39 different tests. The tests include having you press particular buttons, twirl particular knobs and move particular sliders.
We did notice that the button tests only tested one button color and did not test for blinking. So you could still have a button that wasn't 100% and might not discover the problem.
Thanks - this works on the original Montage too. Probably the MODX as well?
Re. button tests - did you try the LCD/LED test? When you hit enter it cycles through all the LED colours.

This has been a standard diagnostic mode going way back. The reason why this information is not published in public documentation is that there are often commands in diagnostic mode that can erase your data or impair your usage as a user. The information contained in the service manuals (including test mode, schematics, disassembly, etc) is targeted towards repair technicians who have the training to safely use the information. The concern here is perhaps not for those who have posted thus far -- but for the wider reading audience. A "let me see what this will do" approach without any caution may lead to heartache.
