Just got word that the 'Improved the MIDI 2.0 behavior' mentioned in the release notes for the 2.101 OS update refer to work related to the ongoing effort to support MIDI 2.0 and the upcoming Windows 11 device driver changes being made for MIDI 2.

That suggests that there may be MIDI 2.0 demos at NAMM 2025 but we haven't heard anything specific about that.

Check out MIDI.org's NAMM schedule.  Among other topics, Jan 24th is a session on OS progress which includes Windows, Linux, MacOS, etc.

The "big" push seems to be something Montage doesn't natively have: MIDI over Ethernet essentially using UDP.  The elevator pitch used for Ethernet is cable distance benefits while maintaining timing.  Kind of funny that Motif had the network plug-in boards that were thrown out for probably top reason cost (burden to expand cards or memory ... For those who never would) and then also what BM has mentioned about the complexities of putting on the engineering hat to manage networks vs. the relative ease of USB (so called plug and play).

Although if you have the bucks, you could buy a box that goes from USB to Ethernet - I'd hope the industry would force Ethernet ports back onto keyboards.  The CPUs used for keyboards already have support for network (even Montage classic has a non-popped network interface).  Firmware updates in the studio would make a lot more sense going straight to memory from a wired connection.  Wireless would be great too but I think the analog (circuitry) team is still skiddish on integrating high frequency RF along side their PAC stuff.  Still competitive pressure is showing others willing to go BT and/or Wifi.  We'll see how this shakes out.  Montage M could always go USB-to-ethernet and still support this network MIDI stuff with a dongle.  Not pretty, but possible.  Montage Classic could too but there's not going to be a software (firmware) update to MIDI 2.0 that legacy box.

Back to MIDI 2.0 in general, NAMM shows that some profile work is being routed.  Second round of a piano profile.  A "new" drum profile.  And also the replacement for Mackie control - a more generic DAW control.

The software dev for Microsoft who gives lots of updates has various posts here and there about what he's seemingly focused on in the run up to NAMM.

So ... Plenty of info out there.

Work is being touted (not routed - autocorrect fail).  Probably more.  Ahh, technology.

Same here, they don't seem to show us what this update brings to the table or how this is going to benefit us in anyway. Anyone have any video's showing what the purpose of this update is going to do for us ?

If a big chunk is preparing for a public release of Win11 drivers then there's nothing to see or really to advertise unless they want to jump the gun on Microsoft's availability timeline which would have some risk.  Laying the foundation and saying walls and a roof will be provided by Microsoft at some unspecified time with some chance that the foundation may need alterations if Microsoft does something expected has a lot of possible pitfalls.  And it may have been a case of anticipating Microsoft's readiness and not wanting Yamaha to be the long schedule pole while Microsoft slipped.

Maybe we'll get more info but right now the release notes are it.
