This does not happen. It goes directly to update process with no logos or ANY screen whatsoever, just directly to updating.

Convention would dictate always backing up before a firmware update. What is initialized and what is not depends on your previous firmware (before an update) and the current firmware. It has to do with a check the firmware makes on the previous firmware to see if a certain "portion" is equivalent or not. If it is, then it skips overwriting this area -- and I imagine this is what makes all the difference if you lose user content or not.

My opinion is that even if you are not going to lose anything - backing up before a firmware upgrade forces a backup - which are needed from time-to-time regardless of firmware upgrades. This gives you an opportunity to "roll back" to your last firmware upgrade (or recover back to that time) which is likely better than going back to some backup you made ages ago (several firmware updates back).

I do not see anything alarming in having your user/library area untouched from a firmware upgrade. This is expected given a certain set of circumstances. And, to me, minor build numbers would be most likely (like 1.50 to 1.51). Perhaps 2.0 to 2.5 is similarly "minor". I would expect more major changes which may dictate the user area gets wiped between major versions (2.x to 3.x). This is not a rule - it really depends on how the different file areas within the firmware fall out when Yamaha builds the f/w.

Yamaha logo or not - I press the button combination until I see Montage start to tell me it's attempting to upgrade firmware. It's entirely possible that Yamaha internal gets a different version which updates slightly differently and creates some slight differences in the instructions. There is also a video by Yamaha on the firmware upgrade process which is probably better to compare against since you can see the screen they have on the video.

Hopefully the docs can get cleaned up since firmware updates tend to have lots of variation in success and at least the instructions can be 100% correct without ambiguity and aligned with the videos and any other forum official posts. Reduce the ambiguity.

Hi Jason. Yes, of course the variations pertaining to the various conditions and dates of roll-out, etc. will exist.
However, my mentioning of this is for a different reason, which is, have Yamaha now come to the point procedurally, that data is NOT supposed to be wiped. Yes, we understand backup prior to anything as a rule but, as the warning states that it WILL wipe data as a normal function may now be no longer true. Also, I would like to here from others . Surely if others have discovered that they need to load-in saved data because they see that there has been a wipe or not. No one has mentioned this.

There have been previous version combinations where no data was wiped. v2.0 to v2.5 is not the first example. Assuming it will be wiped is safest since Yamaha does not want to publish a matrix for people to follow - this is unnecessarily complicated both to document and to follow. There is no "not supposed to be wiped" property. If you upgrade from v1.50 to v2.50, your data will be wiped. Other combinations as well. It's not a property of the new firmware - it's an interaction between what you currently have and the new firmware. There's a check which either will execute or not depending on the results and I believe this is where the data is lost.

The most correct statement is that your user/library content may be wiped out - so take a gamble OR backup. This has always been true. I like the conservative approach where the statement is: "Assume your user/library content will be wiped, so make a backup." Either way - both statements are true. A statement that your user/library area shall be (as in the legal use of "shall" ) wiped - as an undeniable fact - has always been false. This version doesn't change that.

I'm not saying the official docs are on-point or not. That needs to get cleaned up to remove the ambiguity if the docs are not factually correct.

Should not use "will" in order to be factually correct. I personally think the best way to modify this would be to say:

A simple edit which allows for the case where Montage does not touch the user memory to also be correct.

Funny, but the same performances were available as a free extension.

Open up and read the "_nf" (new features) PDF which is packaged with the firmware. You see there are MAJOR differences - new screens that didn't exist before - which are arguably more obvious than performance names. That's one way if checking the version number, the easiest way, is not working for how you want to operate. There are new preset live sets - so you can look at those (A "Motif XF" live set). You can look at the performance recorder new feature -- again, in the new features document with pictures. You can look at the waveform editor by selecting an element first and editing the waveform. There are new fields on this waveform edit screen as shown in the new features document.

Every performance after the Turkish Drums. The firmware comes packaged with the data list (rev h). Open that up and see the "*1" performances (2144 - 2655).

Hi Sergey. Yes, I do. Please note that the 512 performances are the 512 performances from the MOTIF XF. There are also some new performances. The video that is linked to the right side of the forum's page showing OS2 lists some of these but, I don't know if it is complete

Funny, but the same performances were available as a free extension.

If you look back at hints dropped by Yamaha - you will see mention of future firmware updates integrating the Motif XF content into Montage. v2.5 is the realization of this hint. The slightly funny thing is that initially the rationale for not having this content was that Montage was forward thinking and not going to rehash the past. Maybe in a future firmware update we'll see the original Motif's PowerGrand and JazzGrand pianos which have been requested (primarily as "IIAF doesn't convert" posts).

The thing that is not funny about integrating this content into Montage firmware (it's not funny, still - it's a good thing) is that you do not have to "kill" a library slot or muddy up your user area for this content. It comes "free" also without taking up any additional Waveform resources since all the Motif XF waveforms are already in Montage.

You could have always combined it with ANY other library - since there are no waveforms in the XF preset content. This would have been, in the past, the way to do it. 640-512 = 128, so I bet there are libraries people use that use 128 or less performances. All of these 512 Performances could have been "stuffed" into any other library (library shuffle -- see article).

However, that is not necessary now.

Hi, from Os 2.00 the upgrade 2.5 do not erease User and Library data for me, but it's always secure to save a backup file before to process any OS upgrade.

You do not delete a Performance from a Library as much as you recreate the Library.

Step 1. Assemble the data you wish to include in the new Library. That means use “Library Import” feature to transfer the Library to the User Bank. This will NOT overwrite anything currently in the User Bank (so if your goal is to add new data make sure it is in the User Bank).

Step 2. Press [UTILITY] > “Contents” > “Data Utility”
Touch the “Performance” folder... here you can review/manage what is in your User Bank. You can “Delete” the Performance(s) you wish to remove. You can mark each that you wish to delete.

Step 3. Once your User Bank has everything you wish to have, SAVE as a new LIBRARY FILE.

Step 4. Delete the original Library and load the new Library File

And the “DAW button” is called “Remote” and now appears on the [PERFORMANCE (HOME)] screen in the lower left corner.

That's a way inconvenient UI.
The editor has to be available on PC.

You did not get it. The remote functionality cannot be assigned to any physical button.
That would be a killer feature 😉

Actually, DAW mode deserves a top-level button such as Home or Live Set.
