I opened category search, selected ALL and ALL thus, allowing me to move sequentially thru all of the factory presets. I then choose, to my liking and stored each one sequentially as I moved thru the listings. Of course, my new selections now the USER section. Great but, many need to be sorted differently and reorganized. I need to be able to do this on a computer since there isn't any practical way of doing this on Montage. I have Connect installed but, it only comes on-line when cubase is active and even then it appears not to be a performance re-organization app, suggestions?
Hi Phil,
There are several ways to proceed. As you surmise when you selected and stored your selections they are moved to the User Bank, in the order you stored them. If you then find you would like to reorganize them there are few options:
You can organize your Performances using the LIVE SET feature: designed so that Performances from any Bank/Library can be organized in the order you need them. There are 8 USER Banks of LIVE SETs. Each User Bank of Live Sets has 16 Pages. Each Page has 16 slots. The Live Sets can be named and organized quickly for use on stage or other situations.
While not perfect for everyone, it does allow you to have customized orders for different uses.
To store a Performance to the USER LIVE SET:
Recall the Performance
Hold [SHIFT] + [LIVE SET] to Register your selection.
You will be taken to the lowest numbered empty slot, which will be highlighted and flashing... touch the box to "register" your selection.
Once in a LIVE SET, you can "Swap" locations, "Delete" items, etc., to make changes or simply start a new Page.(depending on your requirements)
ALTERNATE METHOD 1:
You can capture each Performance you wish to use using Montage Connect... (which by the way can be run with or without a VST/AU host). Simply launch it as a standalone application on your computer. Using the Montage Connect you can backup each of your favorite Performances on your computer as an individual (.X7B) file. The bulk process takes 1-2 seconds, (naming them takes more time). You can then clear the Montage internal User Bank, and then bulk them back into Montage in the order you require. When you bulk them from Montage Connect they arrive in the synth's Edit Buffer, you can then press [STORE] and place them in your User Bank.
ALTERNATE METHOD 2:
Once you have your Performances in the USER Bank, SAVE them as a .X7L Library, then install that Library (by loading it).
Now you clear the internal USER Bank
Then using LIBRARY IMPORT you can restore the Performance to the User Bank in the order you desire.
Hello Phil - don't know in what order you want them, but if alphabetically figures in the scheme of things you could start by re-ordering the Preset Bank itself by tapping the 'Name' square at the bottom of the screen next to 'Default'. I know it's a bit late now, but might be handy later. It works OK for Categories too - they'll all be in alphabetical order as well.
Hello BM - is the new 'Favourites' function any use here? It's a lot faster than 'Storing' but I guess you can't convert them to User files? Or edit them?
Hi BM:
Thanks for replying. First, the set list suffers from the same caveat that category search does, unless it is my user error.
When you are in performance mode, you have ALL controllers (buttons, sliders, knobs) working as intended by the programmer.
For example: The ARP buttons in cat search and set list. You can't use them because they switch performances, unless each ARP is matched to each scene button which does work when using those two aforementioned pages. I think that there might be some other physical performance buttons, slider and or knobs that don't avail themselves for their intended purpose per performance- other than being on the performance page.
Is this completely true?
Pardon me but, I just checked and it seems that when using set list/ cat search, all controllers work as intended except for ARP buttons so. as you say, set list offers some options.
Regarding the Montage Connect, which I have installed, with all the latest drivers per OS 1.5 recommendations but, not sure how to get it to work. Are you saying that I can bulk- dump from Montage all USR memory? Bulk dumping does all at one operation. It seems you are stating that one performance at a time and the same when coming back to Montage? We need/ should have a standard file management system either on-board or for the computer. I think John Melos would have a Montage system soon, No?
The .X7L method is still one-at-a-time true?
Sorry, but there must be, should be, standard type methods for these type of electronics.
I seriously do appreciate all you do for us, and I hope you don't take me as insulting. Thanks again and I'll wait to hear from you regarding the Montage Connect since it just sits there doing nothing.
Hello Rod, Thanks for your input but, I'm familiar with that already.
It's not completely true. Here's why: The screen you view when in your Live Set is optional. The Live Set home screen tasks the front panel button with selection options, not something you necessarily want when performing. The way it is designed to work is, you can activate your Live Set (an icon will appear on the very top line), you can now return to the Performance Home screen... where all screen option, Knobs, buttons (including the Arp and Motion Seq) are accessible for performing.
Once you've activated the Live Set you can advance to the next program in that set with the Assignable Foot Switch set to "Live Set+"; it matters not on what screen you are, stepping on the FS will advance through Live Set. Think of Live Set as your Set List, literally a list. Once programmed and activated you can advance through the list with the FS.
You can have what ever options you would like available by storing your Performance with the function you would like available.
Please see the following article: Performance Basics and the LIVE SET
The button reassignment is a different issue (even though it may influence your use of the GUI while organizing). There is a case for wanting to listen to different ARPs while in CATEGORY SEARCH - and you cannot really do this (ignoring scenes - because this depends on SCENE programming) because the ARP 1-8 buttons are reassigned to shortcut keys to select the performance.
The shortcut keys for the non-touchscreen crowd is great. When I press [SHIFT]+Number C [1]-[8] to see what it does - this does the same thing as pressing no shift. So there is an opportunity to add a path (although non ideal because [SHIFT]+ARP 1-8 is harder to press to select an ARP than without the [SHIFT]) in order to keep the ARP selection and still retain the shortcuts.
I think it's good feedback that users would want to stay in category search or live set mode during their performance and see if Yamaha can accommodate this workflow.
To me, the live set is even more of an example of a mode that would be best if all functionality (including ARP selection) could be retained while in LIVE SET mode. Currently, I have transitioned to using this mode as my new "HOME". I do not have ARPs at the moment, so there's nothing lost in doing so. However, if I start to utilize ARPs - then I'll have to switch in/out of LIVE set mode during a night which will be non-ideal. I do understand not doing so would be fighting against the features as they have been implemented - so I'll have to conform to get ARPs to work. But it would be great if perhaps one could "shut off" the physical button shortcuts as a menu configuration so buttons retain their primary function.
Since the problem morphed into button control vs. organization, I'm not sure going through some alternate organization options is going to add value here - so I'll leave it at that.
