Hi everybody,

I have a question about the use of pattern chain function and mute track

In SCENE 1 I have 4 tracks recorded (4 measures each)
TR1 Guitar
TR2 Bass
TR3 Drum
TR4 PAD

When I use PATTERN CHAIN I say that SCENE 1 will play from measure 1 up to 16 (4 repetitions), at bar17 I'll change scene

I would like to mute tracks 2 and 3 from measure 1 to 8 and let them play from measure 9

How can I do it?

Thanks a lot

You can create scene 2 from measure 1 to 8, and scene 3 from measure 9 to 16, while muting what you want in each scene.
You have tools to copy and split tracks.
Currently, you will not have to copy tracks that need to be muted....
When chaining scenes, it will be S1, S2, S3, ....

Yes I know, this is the easier way, but unfortunately montage has only 8 scenes and if I need to change often the scene within a pattern is not enough

This is one of the reasons why on yamaha idea scale I asked for 16 scenes

While you wait for the MONTAGE to grow 8 more buttons, we highly recommend you use the “easier way” you already know about... in constructing musical Sections of a composition, don’t limit yourself to just the 8 Scenes of the current Pattern... if you think about them as 8 per Pattern, then there are 1,024 Scenes available across the 128 Patterns.

While, it is true, you are limited to 8 per each Pattern, this means your Chain is restricted to the 8 Scenes of the current Pattern... but since data can be moved about within the Performance Recorder, you can workaround this fact. More than one Pattern can be linked to your Performance!

Scenes can be 256 Measures in Length, 8 per Pattern, 128 Patterns... With those parameter limits you can use the “Edit/Job” and your programming skills to accomplish your goal. Don’t overlook the tools available... Append is your friend... use it like ‘chain’ function.

What you can do now
When Scenes are ‘converted to Song’ notice that you can target not only which Song but from what Measure in that linear structure.
You can link a second Pattern with your Performance and have 8 more Scenes...
If you need more link a third Pattern with your Performance to add yet another 8...

Create each Scene Length as necessary to accomplish each task; use “Append” to add one Scene on the back of another; use the Chain feature where necessary to create longer musical Sections; use the “Split” Job to divide Scenes into less measures; use the “Put/Get Phrase” feature to build new Scenes when necessary.

The “Put Phrase” and “Get Phrase” Jobs are your method of moving Scenes between Patterns. And begin to build longer and longer Scenes as you begin to commit to a structure. I’ve been moving data around to create musical sections where the last measure is an ‘appended’ fill-in, for example, if I started with 4 Measure Phrases (as you’ve done), I can construct a Chain where I let them repeat four times, but in Measure 016, I place a fill-in.... I then convert these 16 measures to a blank Song, I then turn that into one 16 Measure Scene by using the “Get Phrase from Song (replacing the original 4 Measure data with my newly formed 16 Measure w/fill-in Scene)

You could use Append to make your 16 measures right there in Scene 1, then workout how to silence the Parts you don’t want to sound over the first 8 measures... using Control Change.

The Performance Recorder is a sketchpad for getting your ideas down quickly. Each project is its own little puzzle for you to assemble.

When you are thinking about creating changes, for example, the Mutes you asked about... begin by thinking *editing the Performance*.... MIDI does not have a CC for muting, but you have many ways in the Control Matrix to dynamically silence Parts with this engine! And these can be recorded to the Pattern or Song (as overdubs or in real-time).

For example, you could program a Controller to act as a “group mute” - If I set the Foot Switch to an unused Control Number (#90) I can program the Parts I want to silence (mute), to respond with negative (Ratio/Curve) Part Volume - basically removing them when the pedal is engaged. Controllers can be “overdubbed” — you can Overdub your ‘group mute’ command via the FS. You can create others with AsSwitches, Super Knob, Assign Knobs, etc., etc., etc.

Hope that helps break some of the “limitations” you perceived about only 8 Scenes

Thanks a lot, can you pls help me to better understand how to link patterns?

About my request to have more scenes available (eg. 16) my idea it was to use SHIFT+SCENE in a future upgrade, just an idea

[SHIFT] + SCENE is already used for updating the scene memory for the selected scene button. Your proposal needs work.

I don't want to be critical in a negative sense, but wanting to be realistic and using the current functions of the sequencer, at the moment I think the easiest thing to do is create my 4 or 5 scenes with all the tracks I need, linking the scenes together 1 2 3 4 5 and turn them into a song

I load the song in cubase and then with the various tools I make the collage, copying and deleting the measures of track that I don't need

In my humble opinion, however, with two or three minor adjustments to the montage, event editor and more scenes available, the sequencer would become really complete and would make the instrument excellent even in standalone use

I don't take offense to suggestion - just trying to help you carve out your idea better if/when you present it to ideascale. Colliding with a current built-in function should not get you very far which is why I suggested rethinking how one would select scenes 9-16.

Agreed, the workflow with moving your data from PATTERN CHAIN to Cubase is as easy as "Drag n Drop". When you create a Pattern Chain in the MONTAGE, the title appears in your MONTAGE internal SONG Folder:
[UTILITY] > "Contents" > "Data Utility" > Song Folder
When you open MONTAGE CONNECT in Cubase, click on the SONG IMPORT option... and drag the icon for your PATTERN CHAIN directly to Measure 1 of an empty Project.
With your Preferences for MIDI File Import set to "Auto Dissolve Type 0" - each Channel will be on a separate Track.

In my humble opinion, however, with two or three minor adjustments to the montage, event editor and more scenes available, the sequencer would become really complete and would make the instrument excellent even in standalone use

What can be done on board - includes a similar workflow - using APPEND, GET PHRASE / PUT PHRASE and the other Edit/Jobs you can do much the same as you wrote above - whether you do it in Cubase or onboard will really depend on what you have available at the time.

If you are not near a computer, you can move SCENES around - Once you realize that a PATTERN has 8 SCENEs, and you can link as many PATTERNS as you want with your PERFORMANCE... it is not that difficult to workaround the "8 is not enough" SCENEs complaint. Data movement between the looping PATTERN and the linear SONG can be very useful when working inside just the MONTAGE.

If you use the 16 Sections from NewPattern1 and NewPattern2, when you need to move or merge SCENE 1 from Pattern2 into Pattern1, you do so by PUT PHRASE to a blank Song, then go to Pattern1 and GET PHRASE from that Song... You can then APPEND it on the end of a Pattern1 SCENE... building your data up that way.

You are basically using the linear Song as you would Cubase - a place to assemble your work. Hope that helps.

I don't know very well all the possible combination of buttons currently in use on montage

another idea coul be a combination of SCENE button + the lowest row (1-8) ARP-SELECTON

In this way we could have up to 64 SCENE available

Do you think it may work?

No, I don’t but that’s neither here not there. I’m not the engineer...

There are 1,024 Scenes available!
8 per Pattern, 128 Patterns.
All 128 Patterns can be linked to your one Performance... if your music needs it.

I suggest start by trying to link two Patterns to your Performance and try out what you can accomplish with just that... I can understand (perhaps) using so many patterns, if you are going to inefficient in using them. I have never played a song with 64 sections... never played in that kind of band. I don’t count muting different instruments as a good reason for adding another Section. I’d rather just figure a way to effectively mute and unmute the Parts I don’t want to sound. I would need a better reason to add a new Section.
