I recently got the Montage 8 (not worthy not worthy!) and I'm looking to delve more into the synth domain. I'm quite confused at where to go in this beast and make my own FM sounds. are there any tutorials for dummies out there on that there inter-web?

well, I would like to know what you need 88 algorithms for. more sounds good, but nobody could ever program 32 of them on the DX7 so what is the need for something more that noone ever understood? I'm happy when I know how to make a decent sound out of 2 carriers and 2 modulators, I don't think I will ever know which algorithm to chose from the 88 nor what to exactly do with 8 operators in my lifetime. does anyone? if so please explain πŸ™‚

well in FM there was never such a thing as filters and ADSR. ItΒ΄s nice that the montage has filters, but is that still FM? Or more like a mixture bewteen FM and subtractive synthesis? I like it, but I never understood FM πŸ˜‰

Stay tuned for an upcoming FM programming series from one of the original programmers of the DX7: Manny Fernandez. Within the next week or so we will have his article up on yamahasynth. Manny is a remarkably talented programmer who has already contributed 647 voices for the reface DX on soundmondo. A favorite voice of our team that includes a great video description is one he created for reface DX called "Time Vortex" that you can check out here.

Since the link may be stale - here is an update with dated links:

http://www.easysounds.eu/MusicProductionGuide_2016_02_EN.pdf

Article: "FM-X; The Return of FM", page 10

http://www.easysounds.eu/MusicProductionGuide_2016_03_EN.pdf

Article: "MONTAGE FM-X Guide; Part 1: Basics", page 12

The series continues ...

http://www.easysounds.eu/MusicProductionGuide_2016_04_EN.pdf

Article: "MONTAGE FM-X Guide; Part 2: Spectral Forms", page 16

There is also "FM-X Development Story", page 3. Off-topic of FM-X there is also a "Montage Quick Guide; Part 1 - Performances, Scenes, and Live Sets"

http://www.easysounds.eu/MusicProductionGuide_2016_05_EN.pdf

Article: "MONTAGE FM-X Guide; Part 3: FM-X Stereo", page 14. Off-topic you can also see the quick guide part 2 which has the same sub-title as part 1

http://www.easysounds.eu/MusicProductionGuide_2016_06_EN.pdf

Article: "MONTAGE FM-X Guide; Part 4 FM-X SoundDesign - First Steps", page 14. Off-topic - the quick guide continues with part 3 "File and Library Management"

The latest (as of today) http://www.easysounds.eu/MusicProductionGuide_2016_07_EN.pdf does not have FM-X specific articles. It covers the Firmware Update v1.20 - including an undocumented addition - and also Montage Connect.

Since BM's post points to the non-dated link http://www.easysounds.eu/MusicProductionGuide_EN.pdf - currently this resolves to the July edition. The earlier editions would be better suited for FM-X exploration. Probably, at the time, the link had not transitioned to an archived version (with month/year).

If you take a look at the links, you can walk the month back to get to earlier Montage information which covers other general topics and may be a good resource to supplement what's already available.

Current Yamaha Synthesizers: Montage Classic 7, Motif XF6, S90XS, MO6, EX5R
