Rather than derail a current thread to use it as yet another example for having a performance guide, I'm creating this new one just to point to the other thread.
A "performance guide" would have each preset performance and list all of the controls (mod wheel, superknob, arp on/off, ribbon, assignable knobs, aftertouch, assignable switches, etc) that affect the performance. All of these controls would have some description of what changing/moving/pushing the control does. Also, it would be nice if scenes would have some description so changing to the available scenes gives the user what each scene is "doing". Not necessarily in the nitty-gritty, but broader strokes (for scenes).
The latest reference to show this would be helpful is the thread: https://yamahasynth.com/forum/auditioning-built-in-waveforms
There are two main points to the thread - neither of which touches on the need for the guide. However, another user wanted to turn motor control "off" on the "Vibraphone MotorOn" performance. The fact is, the performance already provides you with this capability by pressing [ASSIGN 1]. I know one could press the [AUDITION] button, listen - and "hear" the part when the audition sounds like the motor turns off - simultaneously looking at all the possible controls for changes (ribbon controller - which could have been used as it is used for rotating speaker on/off - does not have an LED so it would not have been visible. [ASSIGN 1] is visible). The issue with this approach is it is prone to error either in your "hearing" to recognize when the motor sounds like it turns off - or in your visual focus on the keyboard to "see" the control that changes when you do "hear" what you're listening for.
Use of the document for this example would, hypothetically, be:
1) Load the "performance guide" doc in your PDF viewer
2) Search for "Vibraphone MotorOn"
3) Look at the controls documented and quickly see [ASSIGN 1]'s description as: Use PART 2 vibraphone which turns the motor off.
I'm simplifying the description - as PART 2 also has a different dynamic response to the articulation which could also be documented - but using the document would be much more beneficial than the current approach of either using [AUDITION] or digging into all the menus (which I am comfortable with, but still would probably use the documentation as a reference).
I do recognize there are other screens which show which controls are in use - but these do not help with the Vibraphone Motor Off discovery to the degree that the "performance guide" would.
One way that has been communicated is that these are "easter eggs" that you may eventually find. My issue with this approach is that the field to look for eggs is so many acres - I'd rather just have a map of where the eggs are because there can be diminishing returns in expecting the users to find what they need vs. having a guide which helps utilize/discover all the great features the preset programmers spent time developing.
