I formatted a new USB stick in the Montage and copied motif xf performance files from my PC to the USB.
But when I try to load the files on the montage it says illegal file.
I deleted the files and reformatted the USB to try again, but I get the same problem. Please help!:(
I wonder if Montage throws this error for unsupported formats vs. trying to load it as before (8-bit, WXC, LPC). A previous XF issue with "illegal file" was an out-of-memory issue. Corruption is often sited as a possible culprit.
Then there's a thread claiming how elements are enabled/disabled has something to do with the error:

What size is your USB stick? Is it USB2.0 or USB3 (should be USB2.0). I would hope Montage is able to fully format the entire drive regardless of partitions - but some have partitions that are not easy to wipe. There are utilities out there to reinitialize a USB drive to remove the extra partition(s).

Thanks for replying, I have a new USB 3.0 64 GB. Have I made a mistake buying USB 3.0? I didn't think that would be an issue. I started by formatting it on the montage, and then down loaded motif xf performances on my PC. I can't think of anything I have done wrong. The manual says that USB 1.1 to 3.0 can be used. Please help!!:( 🙁

Since USB 3.0 was designed to be backwards compatible (both ways) - I've been surprised in the past when USB 2 devices was recommended as a fix for USB issues.
Tested and verified devices are listed here:
https://usa.yamaha.com/products/music_production/synthesizers/montage/downloads.html
(click on Compatible Device List for MONTAGE)
With link currently:

The list contains USB 3 drives - so the "old" advice to use USB 2 only does not appear to apply.
INFD16GBCOU3.0
DTDUO3C/16GB
etc.
The list still shows only 32GB and below drives. I wonder if this is related to a previous FAT32 limit:

(from the SDCard Association).
This still may not be your issue as it may be one of the other theories such as Montage recognizing this as "bad data".
