Hi,

I've got the Montage 8 and I'm trying to set up a Roland XV5050 Sound Module with multiple layers in conjunction with a BCR2000. I've got the Midi I/O Mode set to 'Multi' but it doesn't seem to be outputing on anything but channel 1. If I set the Midi I/O Mode to 'Single' and select channel 2 I'm hearing the sound set on Channel 2 of the XV5050 so I know the XV5050 is set correctly.

Is this a bug? I've recently updated to the most to date firmware.

Thank You

How many PARTs do you have setup when doing this testing? Because you need to have 8 active PARTs with keyboard control ON if you want 8 MIDI channels to output.

If you load a performance with only one PART, then expect one channel of MIDI information to output. Two PARTs ... two channels. And so on.

If only one PART has keyboard control ON - then mashing down on piano keys will only make their way to one of the PARTs.

You can't output to all 16 channels because PARTs 1-8 are the only PARTs you can turn keyboard control ON. PARTs 9-16 you can only address one PART at a time (by selecting one of the PARTs 9-16 at a time as the active PART).

You can RECEIVE 16-channels of MIDI data at one time.

Ok, that works thank you. That kind of makes sense when local control is on, but I would have thought when local control is off it should default to all outputs.

Thanks for the help.

Slightly curious now, so does that mean parts 9-16 are only to be picked up by an external device such as a sequence etc?

When local control is off - it's well. off. not "all". The strange thing to me is the exception where local control is overridden for the currently selected PART. You can only select a single part at a time - meaning in the list of PARTs - it's the one with the white box around the individual PART.

For the selected PART - local control will be forced to ON even for PARTs 9-16 which otherwise cannot be manually set to turn ON local control.

IF you are selecting a PART which has local control OFF (like part 1-8 where the keyboard control switch is turned off, or at any time parts 9-16 because the keyboard control switch cannot be turned ON at all) then what will happen is the override feature (local control turned ON) will invoke and also, all other PARTs will turn local control OFF.

My take on why this is: I think the mode is so you can "audition" what a part would sound like if the external equipment were to address a part which has the local keyboard control turned off. So in order to hear that part - instead of requiring you to use the external equipment - the mode allows for you to "audition" what it would sound sound like. Turning off all other PARTs is a means to focus on the part you are currently editing. That's my take. There are other uses for this behavior as well outside of simple audition.

And yes - parts 9-16 can either be just controlled by external hardware or you can one-by-one control with the local keyboard if you have that part selected. Which, as mentioned, will "turn off" all the non-selected PARTs for local keyboard control.

Ben,
It is highly recommended when using the Montage as a Master MIDI keyboard controller, that you activate the ZONE MASTER function in UTILITY Mode, then within each Performance you can setup internal and external control. The Montage is capable of transmitting to eight Zones simultaneously. It is capable of transmitting on any MIDI channel from any Zone.

Do not mix up its ability to have 16 Zones with being able to control 8 simultaneously. If, for example, you recall a Montage Performance that uses four Parts, you could then also setup four Zones to transmit Out via MIDI. If you are using seven internal Parts, the 8th could be designated for an external. (While you can transmit internally and externally from a single Zone, it is not the most practical use of the feature. To optimize the Zone function assign a single slot for each). Those Zones you are playing simultaneously are designated "KBD CTRL".

Any slot setup as non-KBD CTRL are *individually* selectable; say you want to play just an external sound alone; each of the non-KBD CTRL slots is or can be a separate internal or external sound.

Go to [UTILITY]
Touch "Settings" > "Advanced"
Set ZONE MASTER = ON
Set MIDI I/O Mode = MULTI (default)
(When using a Zone Master setup within a Performance it will override "MIDI I/O mode = single")

Now in each Performance you have two new programmable areas "Zone Settings" and "Zone Transmit"
Each PART (16 Parts) can be setup with these Zone Settings.

ReNAME and STORE the Performance to one of your 640 User Performance locations.
