I just purchased a new Montage M8X this week. I've played it probably around 8-10hrs so far and in two scenarios, I have received a really loud note randomly. The first time it happened, I didn't pay too close attention and figured it was a fluke. However it happened for the second time just now. I was holding a 2nd inversion G chord and while the G (I think that was the note I heard) initially sounded properly, about a half beat later, it sounded again except extremely loudly (in stark contrast to the p dynamics I was playing in).
I'm on firmware 2.01.0. I updated as soon as I received it so I don't know if any other firmware would've done this. I am playing a performance I created with 3 layers including the CFX2 (it might be the bright one), Almighty, and 80s Layer. The only attribute changed was increasing the CFX2 layer velocity offset to 72. I don't think any of the layers have PAT.
Any thoughts on why this might occur or what I can check to see why this is happening. So far I've only practiced with this but I'm a bit worried it will happen when on stage.
Isolate the part/element involved.
1. save a copy of the problem performance
2. Turn power OFF then back ON
3. Load a different performance and then load the problem performance
3. document, and post here, the EXACT steps needed to reproduce the problem
4. test each part one at a time (mute the other two)
5. test each element, one at a time (mute the others), in the part being tested
I can't reproduce the problem on my M8X based on the info given. Tried CFX2 Bright/Almighty/80s layer and various 2nd inversion G chords both with and without Arp Master. CFX2 vel offset was 68 by default but tried 72.
I'll test again if you can provide more detailed info.
I'm not sure what the scale of velocity offset is. I say this because velocity is supposed to be something with higher resolution (more bits due to MIDI 2.0). But if the scale is up to 127 then your offset of 72 is going to land you more than half way up the velocity scale as your most quiet note. It gets rid of the lowest 72/127 (57%) of the dynamic range. Not sure this is related.
I'd probably take a flat preset and play it while recording to a DAW then go back and look at the recorded velocity values. If you see notes pop out and the velocity is 127(ish, or whatever max is) and you weren't pounding the keyboard then something may be to up. I guess I'd check the velocity curve settings to see if the keyboard has been adjusted to make it too easy to saturate velocity for your playing.
Still, if you randomly see velocity shooting through them this could be an issue. Might be warranty worthy if you can eliminate other reasons.
