Unlike my Motif XF7, I've heard that the Montage does not support network connectivity. I think I know why, and I'm curious to see if I'm understanding this correctly.
The last few months, I've been getting heavily into a Cubase-centric workflow. This means that the setup for my XF7 is stored in the Cubase project, via the XF Editor VST. As a result, I haven't been using the network connectivity very much at all. I haven't, for instance, created or read an "all" file in quite a while.
I suspect that this is why network connectivity support was left out of the Montage. Am I correct about this?
Thanks…
There's a huge commentary by BM on this right here on this forum concerning the history and why it doesn't exist. I wanted to be able to move the faders on a Yamaha TF series hardware mixer and have all the faders on the Cubase software and Montage move in unison and vice versa.
I'm still using (recently revived) the ethernet connection although had to change from apple's SMB implementation because they stopped supporting old versions and it therefore stopped working with the motif. Its all good now and I move midi and audio files between the motif and the mac. I think on the montage they may be presenting the storage as a drive so it would look like a drive from the mac (using USB) ?!?!
That said, I might fiddle around with the VST editor in cubase AI because currently with Logic I'm ending up with multiple versions of songs and finding it tricky if I want to work on both the motif and logic version of the same song....
For Montage they are working on a different type of communication utility that will not depend on the operating system of your computer, as mentioned, Apple stopped supporting SMB (a Windows) protocol) some times being downwind of the whims of the computer OS is not a good place to be. But among the utilities that will be made available for Montage will be something to take care of moving file and content data to and from a computer. The timeline is not quite firm yet, but this is in the works.
As is usually the case, improvements and enhanced workflow items can be expected - if you've been around throughout the history of the old Motif-series, you can expect the same type of ongoing/continuing support development (and more) in the new Montage era.
Hey Bad Mister
Thanks for the reply. To be fair Apple didn't stop supporting SMB, in fact they started supporting it directly, just very poorly !! Its explained at these links http://appleinsider.com/articles/11/03/23/inside_mac_os_x_10_7_lion_server_apple_replaces_samba_for_windows_networking_services and http://www.tweaking4all.com/os-tips-and-tricks/macosx-tips-and-tricks/smbup-mac-os-x-smb-fix/ along with how to reinstate the open source SAMBA implementation that was used before.
That said, i guess it amounts to the same thing as you're saying, ie. you don't want to be at the mercy of the vagaries and vicissitudes of the computer industry. It will be interesting to see how this functionality is implemented in montage.
