I spent some time coming up with nice changes to the element aspect of a part by changing the Pitch EG. I recorded my creation and saved it simply as "horror movie sound effect". I turned the Montage off and assumed my changes to the pitch EG (attack, decay 1, decay 2, release) would be saved. I turned the Montage on this morning and wanted to start creating more with where I left off. I loaded "horror movie sound effect" in this morning and wanted to review the changes I made last night and pressed play. All that plays is a standard piano in place of what I thought was going to be my newly created sound. I checked the Pitch EG controls and nothing was actually saved from the prior night. All that was saved was the name and the key I pressed including the time I pressed them. I do not want to waste time going back and attempting to recreate what took a few hours of fiddling around the previous night. Why is this happening? I thought all changes to elements and parts etc. are supposed to be saved.
So sorry, that you have lost your work. You have to chalk this up to being new, not reading the manual, and confusing the difference between SAVE and STORE.
Sorry, but some learning requires burning your fingers on a hot stove. When you say that you made some changes to a sound, and that you powered down, then you loaded it in the morning... That was unnecessary - all you needed to do was STORE your Performance.
If you "Stored" your edit, you would not have to load it when you powered back on. STORED data stays in memory until you overwrite it or load new data over it. Sounds like what you did was make some edits and some how missed an important step.
Press [CATEGORY SEARCH] > select "ALL" > under BANK set it to search "User" all the User Performances you have STORED will appear.
It is hard to tell what steps you may have missed but I highly recommend before you do any "serious" editing you do some basic test edits, Name and Store the data. Power down, power up and find your data. You will see that Loading it from USB is totally not necessary... And could be where you messed up.
Not sure what instructions you were following when you saved and then reloaded (?)
The QUICK GUIDE portion of the Owner's Manual should be gone through step-by-step, before you begin any "serious" editing or tweaks. It avoids learning the hard way. If you make a minor change experimenting, and are unsuccessful, no worries. But by starting to ski down an advanced course as you first effort, you can expect to have some difficulty. Take your time.
Some important Montage terms:
Preset - permanent data (impossible to lose or overwrite = Factory data)
User - area where your edits and creations are stored
Store - the act of pressing the [STORE] button naming and writing data to User memory
Save - the act of writing data to a USB drive connected to the Montage; creates a .X7U or .X7L file
Thank you for your response. I havent had a chance to review and try this out yet but, from reading your response, I noticed that , yes, I never actually came across anything dealing with STORE, just save. And also you are spot on with me needing to read the owners manual thoroughly. Ill get back to this post and let you know how things progress. I appreciate your time and help.

Excellent advice!

I read the quick guide part about saving and storing. It seems it talks about saving to a USB mainly. So clicked on store, then clicked on content type "performance", as it was the only place it would let me store. I changed the name. It said it was stored. I went back and clicked on category search, clicked on user and the stored file appeared. I clicked on the file and everything seemed fine. Then I turned off the machine and turned it back on to search for the stored file. I repeated everything to get to it and it is no longer there when I click on load with content type as "user file. But oddly when I click on store/save, the file is there. But when I click on it, I am only asked if I want to overwrite the file. I dont get it. Please help again. This should be easy I feel.

Could you shoot me an email address to contact you at?
Ryan, let's try this again:
Some important Montage terms:
Preset - permanent data (impossible to lose or overwrite = Factory data)
User - area where your edits and creations are stored
Store - the act of pressing the [STORE] button naming and writing data to User memory
Save - the act of writing data to a USB drive connected to the Montage; creates a .X7U or .X7L file
When you want to STORE a Performance press the dedicated [STORE] button. This writes it to internal memory.
SAVE is the process of writing data to a USB storage device. When you go to UTILITY and look in the folder marked "Performance" you are looking at a list of User Performances you have created out of the 640 potential locations. You can Rename or Dekete them. But to store a Performance to internal memory you must press the [STORE] button.
Ryan - another thing that might be causing confusion is when you talk about loading a sound. When you made your changes to the performance and STORE this will write it to the internal user memory so it will still be there when you turn the montage off and on again. When you click on LOAD it will be looking to move a user file from a USB stick to the internal user memory but your performance isn't there which is why you can't see it.

That's why I'm so confused. I press store, then store it as a user performance. Then everything seems fine until I turn it off. Once I turn it off and on again. The only time I can see the names of the performance is when I happen to click on store/save, but not load or data utility. Under load it says please insert usb and under data utility it gives me the choice to remame or delete.

Roger that, I got that going now.
I actually just found them, one is stored under keyboard, one is stored under syn comp, and one is stored under musical fx. So I have found them, but why when I record, does it not store the song/performance identically? It only stores the keys I pressed and not the modified pitch eg settings. Thank you, I know this sounds ridiculous, as it is proving to be. I'm just trying to get to where I can create and get my thoughts out into the machine successfully. I really appreciate the help.

If you started editing by starting in a Preset Keyboard sound, or in a sound that was a Musical Effect, naturally when you stored the Performance that is where Montage thinks you want to categorize it. Did you forget which sound you began editing to put together the Performance?
In the early days of Midi this was probably easier to understand... A typical Midi recording situation was three items: a sequencer, a tone generator and keyboard controller. In some cases you had the tone generator and keyboard together in one with a separated sequence recorder. Then finally the all in one.
The song is separate from the instruments that play it. It is a separate bunch of data. Let's break it down to its simplest iteration.
You, and the "CFX CONCERT" piano sound. You record 10 solo piano pieces. That's 10 separate Song titles... Which one should be linked to the CFX CONCERT when you recall it?
If the Song is loaded in and the correct Performance is recalled... Press [STORE]
This will create a link between the Song&Performance.
When you want to recall it all together, don't recall the Performance.
Go to the PLAY/REC screen
Touch the "Song Name" box
Select "Load"
The Montage will take you to a list of Stored "Song&Performances" in you current User memory.
Touch the box to recall them together.
In the instance of the 10 solo piano pieces each SONG will be linked with CFX CONCERT (Performance).
The Song will find the Performance... Even if you've forgotten 🙂
Hope that helps.
I did forget haha. I guess i got lost in the crazy sounds and sound quality and forgot where I started at 🙂 However, Thank you. I am understanding now a bit better. I have started from a new slate and restarted the process. Everything is making more sense and flowing smoother 😉 . I really appreciate the help. I have other questions about cubase recognizing the montage and getting the sound into cubase, but I'll ask on a new thread soon once I try and figure it out some more. Again, really appreciate the help. Thank you.
