Yes what you want to do is possible- here's how:

1) Press the [Category Search] button

2) In the display, tap [Init] (initialized)

3) In the display, tap (select) 'Init Normal'

4) Press the [Enter] button

5) Select a Part number by pressing one of the Part Select [1/1] - [8/8] buttons

6) Press the [Enter] button*

*Note: If this step is excluded your previous Part will be overwritten by newly selected Peformance

7) Press the [Category Search] button

8) In the display, locate desired voice/performance

9) Press the [Enter] button to insert voice/performance to selected Part

10) Repeat steps 5-8 to add additional Part voices/performances

11) When finished, press the [Store] button

12) Press the [Enter] button

13) Name the (new User) Performance

14) Press the [Enter] button or tap [Store Yes]

Just realize the sequencer in the Montage is not a full-blown one like in the Motif (nor is it meant to be) - it's a MIDI performance recorder. The idea with the Montage is that most users at this level of keyboard will be using a computer-based DAW.

If a built-in (traditional) MIDI sequencer is important to you, you may want to look into the recently discontinued Motif XF (which features an Integrated Sampling Sequencer -designed for professional on-board sequencing with full record and edit features). Or the current MOXF-series which features the same sequencer as the Motif XF without the sampler integrated into it.

While, as outlined above, you could/can, technically speaking, record a track at a time into the Montage Play/Rec function, but it is properly called a "Performance Recorder", because its primary function is record (document) the performer interacting with a Montage "Motion Control" Performance. The Montage features eight arpeggiators, so a Performance can be a combination of direct keyboard "play" and controlling the various arpeggios via the Motion Control engine. It is optimized to capture controller movements within the massive control matrix, as your physical interface can address multiple Parts simultaneously, individually/separately with a single gesture.

Track-by-track music production, is best handled via Montage's groundbreaking 32 bus digital audio outputs. Not only are you buying the most advanced synth ever, you are getting a full fledged built-in digital mixer with boutique grade dual Insertion Effects per Part (17 Parts: sixteen synth Parts plus the A/D input Part). MIDI recording is best handled with a computer, laptop, or tablet connected to the Montage, where editing can be accomplished...on the external device.

The on-board recorder (Montage has the ability to record MIDI or audio via the PlayRec feature) records MIDI but is a "sketch pad" recorder, to quickly capture your Motion Control creations. Traditional musical MIDI creations are best captured with a more traditional working "sequencer". Song data recorded on the Montage will be available to your computer via the USB connection (your computer will be able to see your Montage Song folder using "Montage Connect") you just drag it into a Project window and your ready to add to your composition.

Montage owners are entitled to the entry level version of Steinberg's Music Production software, Cubase AI8, which allows both traditional linear, and loop based recording, full graphic editing, and audio recording with advanced integration with your synthesizer.

"At this level of keyboard"? That is a brazen and ridiculous attempt to promote the Montage. Stop bs-ing the audience, please. The Kronos harnesses nine (!) distinct synthesizer/sound engines into a single, integrated musical instrument, and costs just as much as the Montage ($2,999.99 at Sweetwater). Korg went one step further by implementing a sequencer worthy of the name. The omission of a sequencer inside Montage is a clear sign Yamaha doesn´t care about its (former) customers. Sad.
