Hello
Im looking for standalone workstation so i can produce music without PC.
Yamaha Montage is suitable for that task? Some sources say it does not have build sequencer, what that means in practice?

You cannot edit what you record on Montage note-by-note: You cannot change a note's length. You can't delete one note out of a run of notes. You cannot change one note out of a run of notes.

Each track - you have to re-record the notes (by playing piano keys) to edit instead of modifying the notes in memory.

The "job" functions do not exist either. Where you could say I want all the notes to adopt this length, or gate time.

On-board, the facilities are geared toward rough drafts. Not necessarily final production. That's not to say it couldn't me done -- just you're given a sledgehammer to do scalpel work. You may eventually find a way if so dedicated.

the montage has been built to rely on a pc or ipad - anything with a DAW piano roll to make songs. Or if you have a hardware sequencer then you can hook that up to the Montage. Im not saying you do, but honestly I still dont understand why people have an aversion to connecting a pc to their synths. Its either that or connecting to other boxes with circuitry but the end results are the same right? Music is being made.

I personally don't like to work on music at the computer, it does not fill right for me..
Is there any other suggestion on workstation besides Montage? MOTIFXF? Genos?

If there's no way to avoid working on PC, what equipment i need to work with Montage and what software?

Thank You for answers!

There are plenty of workstations out there with a sequencer built-in. If you absolutely want to have a hardware sequencer you will have to go for one of those. The Motif XF has one but also the Kronos. I personally had the MOXF which has a sequencer but it was way too complex and cumbersome to use - compared to a PC or Mac. Probably a matter of taste. On the other hand a huge screen and a mouse makes for some nice user interface...

If you decide to use a PC or Mac as a sequencer you need the PC or Mac, and a USB cable. Montage and MODX both come with a license for Cubase Artist Edition. So you have that already. Those can of course be used also as sound generators. The output of the sound can go out through the Montage out as well. Other DAWs will also work.

If you decide on an iPad you need a USB-to-Lightning cable and get for example Cubasis as a sequencer app.

Note that if you want to use the sequencer for live usage, you should be able to load MIDI files generated by a DAW into the Montage and play them without needing to use the computer in the live situation - if that's your concern.

I'm about to start integrating an iPad into the setup. Between charts that are currently using a bulky binder and some possibilities of using the iPad with something like Camelot or Cubasis - the tablet route makes a lot of sense and doesn't add too much bulk to my carry. The keyboard case I have has a dedicated tablet pocket should I want to carry it in like that.

I'm not sure if iOS has something that functions like Montage Connect. Not that you'd need it. But I would personally want a way to easily transfer my "song" (MIDI) files from Montage's Performance Recorder to the iPad without having to break out USB sticks and something that can interface the stick with the iPad somehow. Or one of those dial Lightning + USB-A sticks. I would prefer doing a rough cut in the Performance editor so I can move controllers and record those gestures then bring it in to the iPad for surgery using a sensible editor.
