Hi Bad Mister,

it's clear : Press [UTILITY]
Touch "Settings" > touch "Advanced"
Set the "MIDI I/O mode = single" and select a channel

but how can I record let's say 6 tracks drums,2 pads,2 strings, piano etc... all tracks on a different midi channel (1-16) -I use logic. I would like to listen to all tracks coming out the Montage in the same time, then record audio if I like them. Standard Midi like before, not using USB.

I'm happy because I already know it has a positive answer. You're the man BD:-),thanks so much for your help!

I'm not at all sure that it is clear. From this statement you are judging the size and shape of an elephant by just evaluating the tail!

The statement you placed here, completely out-of-any-context (which is why it's judging an elephant by looking at only one feature), this is an instruction on what you would do if recording a single instrument Performance that occupies multiple Parts. For example the "CFX Concert" piano uses some 18 Elements to build a very highly nuanced piano, worthy of delicate intricate work. Sounds that use multiple Parts to build a single performable sound should be recorded as audio. Say you are performing a brass orchestra section where you use half a dozen different articulations! With a multiple Part Performance you can have different articulation recallable on-demand. Those separate articulation might appear on their own MIDI channel.

The Seattle Sections when played the first violins (G2 and above) occupy Part 1, the second violins (G2 and above) occupy Part 2, the violas (C2 and above) occupy Part 3 and so on... its all a string orchestra "instrument" you are playing so Editing a single stream of data makes this easier.

In a case where you are performing across multiple channels, editing your MIDI data becomes a hunt down which channel holds your actual data. To facilitate editing -merging the note data to a single stream makes sense. Single instrument across multiple Parts, recall these instrument Performances an experiment with the wide range of articulations and changes are possible:
Seattle Sections
Orch Brass Swell
CFX + FM EP
PopHorns Dyn Shake

All examples of single instrument multiple Parts. Use the [AUDITION] button to hear the various articulations available... via moving the Super Knob, activating an AssignSwitch, moving the MW etc., etc., etc.

but how can I record let's say 6 tracks drums,2 pads,2 strings, piano etc... all tracks on a different midi channel (1-16) -I use logic. I would like to listen to all tracks coming out the Montage in the same time, then record audio if I like them. Standard Midi like before, not using USB.

You would use a different setup routine to record "multiple instrument Multi Part" Performances.

If I wrote down the instructions for making a left turn while driving an eighteen wheeler truck, please do not use it if what you want to accomplish is a right turn!

Obviously, when recording drums, two pads, 2 strings, piano etc., you would want all track data on separate channels, separate tracks (if you are thinking about editing the data). Of course, drum notes need to separated from your piano. So the instructions for the left turn are completely useless! 🙂

You would us the:
Press [UTILITY]
Touch "Settings" > "Advanced"
Set MIDI I/O = Multi
(The instructions for the 'right turn')

Thanks for the kind words. Just please recognize there are going to be different setup scenarios based on what you want to accomplish.

At first you think you want to edit your controllers, those used to doing this all "after-the-fact" start to learn with Montage, that you can edit your controllers on the synth such that performing them "in realtime" becomes the artful thing. A single gesture can create half a dozen subtle changes to the sound your playing. Editing them is a matter of programming the sound's behavior "before" you record it. It's a synth.

You also learn that some Montage sounds are bigger than a single MIDI channel... and this opens new possibilities... in how you perform them.

Traditional 16 Part recording is totally possible start with the INIT > Multi template, and place Single Part Performances in the slots of the Performance. Record your speciality instrument, the very detailed, multi Element sounds using the powerful 32-bus audio interface. Or, if you need to record MIDI - generate a single stream of MIDI data

Please follow instructions based on your musical goal. I've spoken with a couple hundred Montage owners and have learned from many that their workflow is more based on habit than on shortest or most efficient route to the goal. Many record MIDI first, but are not sure why. This I found very interesting. They record everything as MIDI "before" rendering audio... and its a habit more than anything else. Challenge your own workflow by asking yourself what your plan is for the data you are about to record. If you are not going to edit the data, or change your mind... you may be able to skip recording it as MIDI all together.
