Why doesnt it line up?

Probably because your DAW does not recognize the names of the MONTAGE Ports it is only counting the numbers. The first pair of stereo Outputs are named “USB Main L/R“ if your first pair are referred to as anything other than “USB Main L/R“ then this will throw the rest of the numbers off.

When a DAW is able to ‘see’ the names you have 32 bus outputs, “Main L/R”, plus 15 numbered pairs, USB 1/2 through USB 29/30
Are you using the Yamaha Steinberg USB Driver?

On a second note why is the volume input when I record through the AD input line so low. I turn everything up to 100 and there is this thin sliver of a line recorded into the DAW. Not really sure why that is. I do see there are gain settings for the USB pairs that I could apply in this instance. I just wish the volume was byu default louder. This is in every DAW so we cant blame them. Its the Montage audio interface I think.

Hi I followed up with Bitwig on this. Here is their answer. "Bitwig Studio just assign numbers to them in the order the driver announces the inputs to the operating system."

So I decided to check out Ableton as well and it does the same thing. I have to set up the input to i pair greater in number than on the Montage to get it to connect properly.

Setting the Usb stereo pair 3&4 output on Montage must be set to 5&6 on the input in Bitwig or Ableton.

For some reason Fl studio adds the proper Main L&R before the Usb pairs so it lines up properly. The other Daws I own do not. At least I can make it work, but is there something developers need to be aware of here?

No, no, no.... If you use Cubase, for example, it properly reads the names of the ports. Yes there are 32 audio buses on the MONTAGE... they are arranged such that the Main Stereo Out happens to be the first two... and the individual Assignable USB Outputs 1-30, are listed after that. The math is not difficult. If the DAW you are using doesn’t recognize the “Names” that Yamaha has given the ports, they allow you (most likely) to name them yourself.

If they do... Do that! This is a non-issue. You seem to understand it. If one piece of software used letters (A, B, C, D, E, F...) and your software used numbers (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6...) you’d simply need to re-Name them so you don’t have to do the math and use your fingers to figure it out.

Simply look up in your DAW’s documentation how to re-Name your ports. Or light a candle and wait for your DAW maker to recognize that this as an issue (make room for a lot of melted wax) they probably don’t see it as a problem) simply look up how to name your ports, if possible.. You now know the issue... solve this one yourself and move on.

Cubase ‘sees’ the proper names — It probably is an extension installed with the Driver that is recognized by Cubase. Your DAWs do not read this, no biggie. Fix it yourself.

Extra Credit:
The only difference between the “Main USB L/R” and any of the other numbered USB pairs, is the “Main USB L/R” can go through the System Effects (Reverb, Variation) and the Master Effect/Master EQ. If you were to ‘bypass’ the System and Master Effects, all 32 bus Outputs would be identical.
