Hi for some reason I have some trouble getting the superknob to playback automation in my DAW. I see that it recorded fine by simple turning the knob and recording the automation.
But when playing back from the DAW it doesnt do anything. Is there some setting I am missing. Does having it in multi vs single mode have anything to do with this? I am outputting to midi channel 1 and can hear the midi notes playing but not the automation. also does it matter if I have the common area selected when turning the knob or part part 1 or 2 or 3...?

How can I record and playback the superknob flawlessly everytime?

How can I record and playback the superknob flawlessly everytime?

First step is to determine what message the Super Knob is generating. You can determine this:
[UTILITY] > “Settings” > “MIDI I/O” > here you can set what message the Super Knob will generate when turned.
“Super Knob CC” = OFF, 1-95
Off — the Super Knob will not generate cc, it will generate Sysex
1-95 — the Super Knob will send this cc number Out via MIDI (if there is a conflict an exclamation mark will appear before the number; the Super Knob will rule over all other controllers if a conflict occurs, with the exception of a conflict with “Scene CC” )

The Sysex data generated by the MONTAGE is without a MIDI Channel (it is a System message) and if you select a CC Number, the data will typically appear in your DAW on channel 1.

If you are recording to an external device, you can ensure your Super Knob activity is being received properly by turning LOCAL CONTROL = OFF. If when you turn Local Control Off, the Super Knob is ‘frozen’, then you’ll know that your Routing is not sufficient to properly record and playback its movement. You must complete the MIDI circuit between the MONTAGE Keyboard (which includes all of its controllers) and the MONTAGE Tone Generator.

“Local Control” connects/disconnects the ‘local’ MONTAGE Keyboard from the local Tone Generator. So only MIDI messages are generated. They travel to your DAW. There you must receive the MIDI messages, typically to a MIDI Track, where you route them back to the MONTAGE on a specific Channel. If your Super Knob CC messages are Channel 1, then you must ensure that the Track with MIDI channel 1 is *active* and set to send data back thru to the MONTAGE.

Thanks Ill try some more things, but what if the DAW is not sending the automation back to the montage but the midi notes are sounding on the Montage?

Then it’s one of two things
1) you may not be echoing back the controller messages on the Channel responsible for documenting the Super Knob (typically, Ch1)
2) you are not manually turning the Super Knob. MIDI controllers only generate MIDI data when you physically engage them.

As you know, Motion Sequences controlling Super Knob Auto do not generate MIDI data.
