Correct. Although Foot Controller 2 can be reprogrammed to affect other routings, the factory performances assign Foot Controller 2 to the Super Knob.

Point of Order:
The Super Knob can be controlled by either Assignable Foot Controller jack. And the programming is on a per Performance basis, much like MW. All of the Factory Set Performances feature the Super Knob assigned to the Foot Controller 2, so all you need do is plug it in and it works. That's what we call a convention... By convention, all factory Performances use Foot Controller 2 for the Super Knob.

By what I'm saying is this is because in each instance it was purposefully programmed that way. It is NOT automatic... As you'll see if you start with an initialized Part. Much like the MW is not automatically assigned to do vibrato. Just because that is what it does 90% of the time many folks think it is automatically set. No, in every program that MW does vibrato that is programmed to either a Common LFO or an Element LFO in a Control Assign set.

The Foot Controller must be programmed on a per Performance basis to control the Super Knob. The normal default for the Foot Controllers are FC1 = cc011 Expression, FC2 = cc004 Foot Control (same as in the Motif/MOXF/S-series synths)

It's not that you have to move it to the extreme so much as you must move the pedal to match the "stored" value... and on some programs that maybe at the extreme position.

The Super Knob position is programmable - this means *where* it is when you recall a Performance is up to whomever programmed that Performance. The pedal being physical (and not motorized) must then travel to 'hook' the stored value. For example, on some Performances the Super Knob starts at 0 (7 o'clock) in which case you will need to rock the pedal fully heel down to 'hook' that value. If the Super Knob is stored at 64 (12 o'clock) you must pass through the halfway point to 'hook' the value. Stored at 127 (5 o'clock) you will need to reach toe down position to 'hook' that value... Naturally turning the knob itself being lighted and continuous-turn it simply begins where it is stored/indicated, but the physical pedal must "pass through" the value to become active. This is completely normal, and by design.

This allows for smooth pickup of the value, rather than "jumping" to the value of the pedal's position.
