When I watch the video: https://yamahasynth.com/community/montage-series-synthesizers/

It's called: Mastering MONTAGE: The Super Knob: Deep Dive (part1) by Bad Mister, and to me it’s very confusing when at 7:28 he’s trying to link Part 1 Assign 1 to the Super Knob. So he selected the Common for Part 1, and lo and behold Part 1 Assign 1 is already in the Destination 1 (see attached file).  He doesn’t say how it got there or how it is now assigned to the Super Knob.  In fact, nothing on that screen says anything about the Super Knob, so how am I supposed to know the Super Knob is involved here?  Then he touches the words “Part 1 Assign 1” and then says it now connected to the Super Knob.  But what exactly was the operation that linked Knob 1 to the Super Knob? Just selecting it?  He doesn’t say, and I’ve been stuck ever since I watched that video and the videos following.

I hate to admit that I am getting desperate to make a breakthrough in figuring this out.  Any help?

Thank you,

Phil

So he selected the Common for Part 1, and lo and behold Part 1 Assign 1 is already in the Destination 1 (see attached file).

You can see at 3:30 in the video this was already set up before he got to the screen at 7:28.

He doesn’t say how it got there or how it is now assigned to the Super Knob.

He shows that just after the 7:28 image you posted.

On that performance common screen you:

1. select a destination

2. select a source

That is it.

For your case the destination should be the part assignable knob you used in the instructions I gave you in the other thread.

The source should be the knob I said to use in the other thread.

Refresher:

1. find an unused part knob and assign it to a destination

2. find an unused common knob and assign it to the part knob in #1

Again - it will be MUCH EASIER to understand if you start with an INIT Normal (AWM2) because that only has:

1. one part

2. one element

3. NO control assignments

4. NO super knob assignments

There are no side effects while you work out the process

Hang in there - you are about to have that 'Aha!' moment you have been waiting for.

This was a chart used for Montage - so some of the information would be updated for Montage M but all of the structural ideas apply here.

In the video, BM is showing the "Common/Audio" level of assignable knobs.  In the above diagram, these are the purple knobs labeled "Common Assignable Knobs".  Without assigning anything - notice that all 8 of these knobs are controlled by Super Knob.  You don't really have to assign Super Knob to any of these knobs.  In the first firmware of the classic Montage, there wasn't even a way to "unlink" an assignable knob from Super Knob.  But this diagram shows the ability to do this and is still used with Montage M.  You'll need to ensure the Common/Audio level of assignable knobs are not de-linked from superknob assuming you want the knob to move when you move superknob.   Other than the linking of the common knob you also want to look to see what the limits and direction are for the knob.  Direction (or which way the common assignable knob rotates when you rotate the Super Knob clockwise) is determined by the low and high values of the knob limits.

Then, the next level of assignment points a common assignable knob (purple one) to one of any Part's Assignable knobs which are green in the above diagram.  This assignment is what you're showing BM doing in your attached picture.   There are 16 Parts and you can assign Common/Audio level Assignable knob to any of the 16 Part's Assignable Knobs.   You can even assign a Common Assignable Knob (purple) to more than one Part-level (green) knob.  When you're doing the automatic assign using [CONTROL ASSIGN] and turning Super Knob - it won't make an assignment if all of the Common Assignable knobs are assigned to something.  Even though the system lets you do this when making assignments manually - the automatic system doesn't know how to manage this.  It won't know which previously assigned knobs to stay away from and which to double up on.

So far we've made it from Super Knob to Common (purple) Assignable knobs to Part (green) Assignable knobs.  The last level of assignment is that the Part Level knobs are then, and finally, connected to a destination parameter.   So one possible connection would be:

Super Knob --> Common Assignable Knob #5 --> Part 2 Assignable Knob #8 --> Destination Parameter (Part 2 Volume)

Phil - MAKE SURE you bookmark the thread that has the source of the graphic Jason posted using the link he gave.

That thread is FULL of useful info about how to find, and manipulate control assignments for both the super knob and the part knobs.

Better yet - read that thread in its entirety and copy/save the most informative parts of it - namely the several replies by Jason and Bad Mister.

You won't find a better resource that what is in that thread.
