I would like to buy from the motifator site the "twidly bits from Bill Bruford" (drum loops). Since I am a montage 7 and modx 6 owner, will it be possible to transfer this file and play it in the montage and modx ? thanks in anticipation for the info.
I think you'd need to use the MIDI file.
Current Yamaha Synthesizers: Montage Classic 7, Motif XF6, S90XS, MO6, EX5R
Call their free 800 number and find out what format they deliver the product in and if they have a return policy.

Yes and No.
The description on their website mentions a few dozen different 'patterns'.
No - you won't be able to play any files that are in the Motif pattern format.
Yes - you can play a MIDI file in the SMF format that uses standard GM mapping.
CAVEAT: when you play a MIDI file on the Montage or Modx the result you get will depend on:
1. what performance you have loaded - it says that product uses 'standard GM mapping' so you need to check it out using a performance that provides that mapping. Both the Montage and the Modx have an 'Init' performance for GM and have several other preset performances that include the GM mapping. You will need to try them out to see which you like best.
2. just what is in the MIDI file - you will likely need to have at least some info about just what is in each MIDI file in order to use it the way it was designed. Hopefully the product will contain some descriptions that tell you about the tempo, sounds and stuff about each file.
A MIDI file is NOT a drum kit and doesn't actually contain any audio or voicings. All it contains is instructions for using a voice to create a sound.
One possibility is that you will just get a single ZIP file that you download and uncompress.
That zip file might contains dozens of MIDI files. You would need to transfer them to your instrument and test them.
The package itself suggests, for those utilizing it who cannot load the pattern files (including non Yamaha keyboards) to load the MIDI file into a DAW if you want to edit it. The MIDI file should be able to import also directly into a MODX pattern and then you can reassign the drum kit keys (sounds on each key) to match. They say already the assignments match a GM standard which most drum kits already loosely do.
It may not be plug and play but you can spend a little time to manually transform the data (.MID file) to fit MODX or transform MODX to fit the data.
Benefit of working in the pattern would be you could create user arpeggios based on the content.
Or if you wanted, just leave it in the DAW and use the MODX as a slave with all MIDI coming from the DAW if you're using this more for produced music than live.
