Yeah, I was going to write respective to the Superknob's midpoint (instead of "half way" ) but decided that would be more convoluted to describe. I'll take essentially correct given just a casual read of docs with no real world experience.
There are really a ton of these "little" improvements that give you a lot more control vs the previous generation. Not necessarily headliners but added up give plenty of justification to trade up even without the headliner features (essentially AN-X this gen).
And, btw - these left/mid/right values are featured all over the 2nd screen plotted with some new line diagrams for visualization. Color would really help but that isn't in the cards this hardware round. When I check my electronic parts distributor for 256x64 OLED screens, monochrome is what's available. And I'd use 2 of these. Color screens are out there but not very mainstream (meaning not a great choice for profitable mass production). Certainty OLED isn't the only tech available ...

True - but it is MUCH easier to see, iMO, on the main screen since you do have the better graphics. And the subscreen doesn't show the super knob position or its left, mid, right settings.
Toby,
I was finally able to wrap my head around what is happening. I went back to my original Montage 8 and practiced again with the Init. Then practiced with the CFX & Pad and successfully assigned the pad volume to the Super Knob. That was my "ahah" moment. I needed to make the connection between the parameter and the Assignable Knob (make sure it is available with the values of 0 to 1023) and then Assign that part/knob to the Common level. It was news to me that anything assigned to the Common level is automatically assigned to the Super Knob. I also got confused with the purpose of the Display Filter, so now I know what that does.
Again, thank you for seeing this through with me! I was ready to offer to fly someone to my location and pay them a tutor fee to help me figure this out. I was that desperate.

but now I am on the M8x
Did you notice, Phil, differences between the aftertouch mechanics of the montage classic and the Montage Mx8? Is the coarse so tiny as well or it is slightly better?
I wish I could answer this question, Daniel. I haven't the aftertouch yet and am barely keeping my head above water getting used to the other upgrades from the Montage 8.

EXCELLENT! I'm know it may seem counter-intuitive at first to do tests on such a simple example when you really need it to work on a more complex example.
But the KEY when testing/learning is to eliminate everything you can that might impact the test you are doing. And with a complex example it isn't always easy, or even possible, to do that.
The quicker you develop the habit of creating the SIMPLEST POSSIBLE test case when you are trying to understand something the better you will understand just how each of those small pieces fits into the puzzle.
Then practiced with the CFX & Pad and successfully assigned the pad volume to the Super Knob.
Another success! Later, when you have time to explore, you can expand that example by changing the polarity, ratio and curve type to see what effect they have on how volume changes. But that's for another day.
That was my "ahah" moment. I needed to make the connection between the parameter and the Assignable Knob (make sure it is available with the values of 0 to 1023)
You've got it now - part parameters can ONLY be assigned to a part knob
and then Assign that part/knob to the Common level.
Yep - part parameters have to go through a part knob and can NOT go directly to the common knobs or the super knob.
It was news to me that anything assigned to the Common level is automatically assigned to the Super Knob.
Not necessarily on the Montage M models. On the new M's there is a 'Link' switch - see page 124 of the Operation doc
In the Super Knob screen, you can set the values for controlling the Super Knob.
You can set a link between the Super knob and each of the assignable knobs
That link switch lets you use any common knob independently of the super knob. I don't know if the original Montage has that link switch - I don't see it in the original reference doc so it may be new to the M models.
So, if you want you can use the common knobs as master controls for selected common parameters and part knob control.
CAUTION - the range for a common knob is ALWAYS 0-1023 when you turn the knob itself manually. The 'Left', 'Mid' and 'Right' settings are only in effect when turning the Super Knob itself.
So if you manually turn a common knob that is linked to the super knob you are TEMPORARILY breaking the link to the super knob. But as soon as you move the super knob even one value that common knob value will immediately jump back to its proper 'link' position. And that 'jump' can be very noticeable in some cases.
