I am running Cakewalk Sonar Platinum and using the Montage 8 as a Controller/Master Keyboard.

The Montage is set to: Local Off.

In Sonar, I insert a track and set the MIDI channels to one of the other Synths. Everything works perfectly until I touch the MOD wheel on the Montage, then it's all downhill from there. I cannot get the Vibrato effect to go away.

Today I was playing a bass patch from another synth, I decided to play with the MOD wheel to add some realism, then the Vibrato never goes away. I turn off the Montage and turn it on and the same thing. This also happens if I am playing sounds in the Montage.

When I play an instrument and while I am recording, the Vibrato is there, however after I have recorded a MIDI track and playback, the Vibrato is not included.

It appears the Vibrato is there when I play the keyboard.

This is ruining my entire creative flow, I have spent the entire day re configuring Sonar and I am not sure why this is happening.

Thanks for the help.

Does it happen when you disconnect from Sonar?
If no, then it is a MIDI configuration issue.

What MIDI Channel or Channels are you transmitting on?
Turning the unit off and on does nothing - often seems like a good idea but rarely if ever solves an issue.

You are describing it as vibrato (Pitch Modulation Depth) that should be fairly easy to track down... could it be a bad MIDI loop. Make sure you are not combining multiple channels to one input. Make sure your connection does not include adapters or extenders, remove any hub (that’s a no-no).

We’d need a bit more info to make full assessment. Can you provide some more details?

Hello and thank you for taking your time to help as always, you should have come in a box with the Montage, giving how super helpful you are. πŸ™‚

I have not tried disconnecting or closing Sonar, simply because I will not be able to play the Synths I am attempting to control. But this is a good idea.
The Montage uses MIDI Port 6 on the MOTU MIDI Express 128.

I have included a diagram which shows primarily what my setup looks like.

For MIDI setup, I have turned Local Control to Off and set the Montage to communicate via MIDI, I also have the Montage set to Transmit Messages On but have turned off Received Message to Off. That's because I will not be controlling the Montage via any other source and I do not want it receiving messages from any other sources, given it is the Master and controller.

I also have the following settings In Sonar for all Projects as explained on this page:
Title

Interestingly, there is a feature in Sonar which Zeros all controllers when playback is stopped:
According to the documentation for Sonar: If this option is enabled, SONAR zeroes (resets) the pitch wheel, the pedal Controller, and the modulation wheel Controller on all 16 MIDI channels whenever playback is stopped. It also sends a β€œZero All Continuous Controllers” MIDI message, which turns off other continuous Controllers on newer synthesizers. If you experience frequent stuck notes when playback stops, try checking this option.

I have the above feature disabled because it causes any settings you have made to become reset. For example: MIDI tracks will become loud even after adjusting the volume, it simply goes back to zero. But even when I enabled it, it does nothing.

Here is a typical configuration for working with Sonar:

1) Inset a MIDI Track
2) Set the Track Input to OMNI (This allows me to receive MIDI messages from any input) In this Case the only input device is the Montage)
3) Set the Track MIDI Output to the device I am going to play/record. In this case, I set the MIDI out to Output 4 (Motif Rack).
4) Finally I Echo the Track. (This is a feature in Sonar which allows you to hear what you are playing)

The moment I hit the MOD wheel, the effect just remains it never goes away.

Now, I know I have a MIDI input coming into the Montage, per my diagram below. Normally, I will not do this, especially given I do not want the Montage receiving communication from other sources but I had left this in. Do I need this?

I can only play sounds from the Montage if I set a MIDI channel to the MIDI ports of the Montage, in any case I do not hear the Montage when playing other instruments because these are all set to individual MIDI ports, which is Normal Operation/setup and I have Local Control Off.

Please let me know if you need additional info.

Suggestion don’t use OMNI. Pick a Channel. Any one channel.

Are you using the MONTAGE β€œZone Master” Function?
Just FYI, when using the MONTAGE as a MIDI controller you should be using the Zone Master function, this way you get to control exactly what your MONTAGE is outputting via MIDI.
