I had just updated the firmware and was testing out the new sounds, when voices started randomly cutting off. See video below for demonstration of the issue.

I've played through several different patches now (new performances and old), and it seems to be happening across the board, no matter whether it is an AWM2 AN-X or FM-X.

Hello,

What sustain pedal are you using?  I use an FC3a and have never had this problem with the FC3A (Half On) setting.

May also consider using the Performance recorder to record MIDI while also recording the video so one could look into what's happening on the MIDI side of things for clues.

Can you tell us if, and how, you are using the sustain pedal and at what points in the video it is on or off?

The first possibility that comes to mind is that you are exceeding the polyphony limit. When that happens some notes will get cutoff to make room for new notes.

The 'St Ensemble K2' perf has 4 parts: part 1 (5 elements), part 2 (2 elements) and so on.

If you play a key in the note range for both parts 1 and 2 that single key will use 7 notes of your 128 available.

Play a 3 note triad and it will use 3 X 7 = 21 notes of polyphony.

While the sustain pedal is pressed those 21 notes of polyphony will continue to be used for OLD notes. So if you play several new chords of new notes without releasing the sustain pedal those 128 availablel will quickly disappear and you will start getting cutoffs.

Try this test which illustrates that 'multi-chord' cutoff effect:

1. St Ensemble K2

2. hold sustain pedal down continuously

3. play and release C1 - hear the continuous low sound

4. play a series of C triads in ALL inversions going up the keyboard starting with root position C3

5. by the time you play the root position C5 triad the low sound has disappeared

You only played 3 new notes each time for 6 times - 18 new notes in all. But parts 1 (5 elements) and 2 (2 elements) play every note so every note uses 7 elements of polyphony and keeps using them until the sustain pedal is released.

If you are getting fairly abrupt, and complete, cutoffs, that is another matter.

I think the issue may be with the USB connection to the computer, either a cable or hub; unplugging the device to host cable seems to solve the problem. It was working fine with the previous firmware so I'm wondering if the additional MIDI 2.0 bandwidth has uncovered a weakness. I'll update once I find the root cause, but thanks for the input everyone!

Interesting - all the tests I describe above had a USB to host cable going to Windows 7 but there was nothing DAW related running on the pc at the time.

Did you have a DAW or other software that was talking to the Montage at the time?

Were you able to reproduce the tests I described even after unplugging the USB cable?

The new MIDI 2.0 bandwidth is in the form of an additional port to use when using MIDI 2.0 with an external devices. As yet Windows doesn't have any MIDI 2.0 drivers.
