Sometimes I boot my PC up and turn on my XF7 (which has an FW16E installed), and everything works just fine. Other times I start things up and FW communications between my PC and my XF7 don’t work at all. In that situation, if I right-click on the FW Driver icon in the System Tray and select Control Panel, I get a message that says “Failed to open Control Panel.”
Sometimes I can fix this by rebooting my PC. Other times, it seems not to help. I’ve experimented with turning the PC on first vs turning the XF7 on first. But I haven’t seen any consistent pattern of when it works and when it doesn’t.
When rebooting doesn’t help, I can fix it by uninstalling/reinstalling the FW driver. But this is a real pain in the rear end:[list]
My PC is running Windows 10 x64 Professional. My XF7 is updated to the latest firmware. The FW Driver version is 1.6.6. I never had this problem before upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10.
At this point I have no idea what’s going on. I’m hoping someone around here does.
Stop uninstalling and reinstalling the driver. This may seem like your only solution if we don't stop and analyze WHY your computer cannot find the driver control panel. Obviously, there is a conflict, something else, yet unmentioned, that is preventing your computer from locating what it needs to smoothly transition to using the YSFW driver. (In theory, you can choose to use the XF as your full time sound card, or only when you launch an application (like Cubase) that requires it... The switch should be painless and smooth).
The easiest, quickest and most efficient way to diagnose and solve your issue is to contact our Customer Support people in Buena Park, CA and open a service ticket. They will call you back and help you through your configuration.
In general, computers that are allowed to sleep, and/or hibernate can lose touch with their external audio systems. When they do they will revert to the built-in (default) audio system. If your computer is not setup (optimized) for audio/MIDI recording there are several steps you can take to remove some of the power conserving items that are known to interfere with audio/Midi recording. While reinstalling the driver probably does jolt your Windows computer back into line, that is extreme and should NOT be necessary...
When you launch an application, like Cubase, it queries (scans) the available connected hardware and if it finds the Motif XF on and connected via FW that should be all that is necessary. Are you using the Motif XF as your sound card outside of (DAW) Cubase? Or only for music production within that application? What, if any, other audio system negotiates for audio on this computer?
That was really helpful. Thanks!
I have an account on my PC that I use for music. It's very bare-bones -- hardly anything running that isn't music-related. My main account, on the other hand, has a lot of different kinds of software running. For convenience, my PC is set up to automatically boot into my main account.
What you said about a possible conflict inspired me to try an experiment. I booted my PC, interrupted the login to my main account, and logged in to the music account instead. The FW Driver worked just fine. Then I logged out of my music account and into my main account, and the FW Driver was still working. So I can do this if I need to, and it's a lot less cumbersome than uninstalling/reinstalling the driver.
Plus, I now have a clue where to look for the source of the problem. It may be as simple as adjusting things so that the FW Driver loads first when I'm in my main account.
And I will also keep Yamaha customer support in mind.
Thanks again…
Mike, have you tried the motifator site? doesn't seem to be working.
Motifator.com is apparently down. I just tried it and got this:
Database Error: Unable to connect to your database. Your database appears to be turned off or the database connection settings in your config file are not correct. Please contact your hosting provider if the problem persists.
Not a good sign…
I get the same thing!
I'm having similar issues. I'm using a mid 2012 MacBook Pro Sierra 10.12.6 operating system.
Whenever I try to Open A Yamaha Steinberg FW Control Panel, I'm getting error message "failed to open control panel"
I've checked the Firewire cable I've set midi interface to FW in the utility section on the motif xf 6 I've done a fresh reboot my MacBook Pro.
From what I can tell and it's not much LOL the FW16e Interface card is sending data but the MacBook Pro just isn't receiving it'
I would downloaded Yamaha Steinberg FW Driver V1.7.4 for Mac OS X 10.9.5 - 10.11.x didn't see a driver specifically for Mac OS x10.12 though also downloaded and install the 1.1.2 extension for Mac operating system 10.12 also MOTIF XF Editor Standalone / VST V1.6.7 for Mac OS X. I have a older MacBook Pro mid 2009 with the 10.10.5 OS X that is set up similar to what I've described however everything downloaded and installed in works perfectly without issues.
Any suggestions on what my next step should be would be greatly appreciated. If there's a specific support portal please include it in the reply thank you.:p
I found a solution to the issue I was having with my Yamaha Steinberg FW Control Panel failing to open error message. I downloaded the wrong Driver V1.7.4 won't work with Mac OS x10.12 I needed V1.7.5 but it wasn't available on Yamaha download page. I found it at the link below in case anyone else having this issue.
