The button presses are easy enough to learn. Follow first the Quick Guide in the Owner's Manual (page 41) "Creating an Original Pattern"
Do not underestimate the Manual for basic concepts and step-by-step instructions to start.

Follow along - it starts by pointing out the factory Demo Patterns... learn about the structure, follow it step by step.

This is how I do covers:
Every music we listen to (I'd say more than 90% of the times) are made up of repetitive verses (SECTIONs in Yamaha's case correct me if I'm wrong please). I listen to the song I want to make its cover, then I identify the verses that are being repeated every verse goes in to a SECTION. It's very helpful to have a good ear and develope your sol-fa capabilites (pitch perfect ear ...) also a very good knowledge of the instruments you will be using in your song will help you in making your own costume VOICEs (if you don't want to use the default ones) and also helps you playing the instrument close to the real one.

On top of that, you may want to know how to use Arpeggios in MOTIF series. It's a very time saving feature which has great capabilities (but unfortunately lacks the nice accord recognition system in the PSR/Tyros series so sometimes a bit painful and frustrating to use).

So you mostly RECORD every single PART, EDIT if its necessary and then the next SECTION. In the end, you push the Chain and RECORD the SECTIONs in the order you wish.

I don't know how much you're familiar with MOTIF XF but it took me a couple years to learn how to create a satisfying cover using my MOX (watered down version of MOTIF XS) from ZERO. I'm not a pro musician and I don't play frequently thus don't get disappointed you can learn the machine quickly

Do you have to record/play the sections in real time or can you simply edit them in sequence? In other words, I have 4 Pattern sections I simply want to chain to make a song. What's the quickest way?

The quickest way is always a matter of how well you know the instrument. I find one is not necessarily quicker than the other - use the method that appeals to you. But if you know the layout of the four Sections, how many measures each is needed, you can create the PATTERN CHAIN in real-time or by dropping into [EDIT] and do it “offline”.

If you press EDIT while in PATTERN CHAIN, you will see a list of measures, each measure has a predetermined Time Signature. The default for all measures is 4/4 time.

In the column for Section you can place the letter you want to have play.
So say your first Section is 8 measures, you would place the Letter ‘A’ on the Measure 001 line
And the scroll down to measure 009, and place the letter ‘B’ to make the Section change at that point

Continue to enter your Section changes at the appropriate measure line.

If you just want it to vamp forever on Section D you can have it do that by not entering any more commands in the Section column. It will play Section D until you hit STOP. However, if you would like to STOP at a specific measure, cursor Down to the appropriate measure and enter “END” in the Section column... move the cursor to the column and spin the Data Dial past Section P is “END”.
