I have several sound libraries. Is it possible to load only the sounds I want from the libraries and put them in specific spots in the users?
In the 10th anniversary pack there are some VST B3 organs. I have never worked with VST's. How do you access them and do they remain always on the computer or can you load them in flash?
Thanks for any info. Lanny

Yes, it is. You can "open" a file and explore the contents. You can select an individual VOICE and direct to any location you choose in your internal Motif XF. The file extension (the coded messages after the dot in the file name) tells you much about what the file contains.

A .X3A file is Motif XF "ALL" data file; while a .X3V file is a Motif XF "ALL VOICE" data file. We assume your sound libraries are in one of these two type of files.

When you press [FILE] your cursor sits on the "TYPE" parameter - here you can decide what type of data you wish to load from this file. If you select "TYPE = all" then the XF will load (literally) ALL of the data in the FILE and replace your USER 1, USER 2, USER 3, USER 4 and USER DRUM banks.

However, if you set the "TYPE = voice" then you will be able to select a single VOICE from the File data and direct it to an internal location in your XF.

Press [FILE]

Set LOAD TYPE = voice
Move the cursor UP into the DIRECTORY and use the DATA WHEEL to highlight the File NAME.
Press [ENTER] to "open" the file and view the listings

Initially, a list of the Voices contained in the USER 1 bank of the FILE appear and the [USER 1] button on your front panel lights to indicate you are viewing a list of 128 Voice in USER 1.
You can view the individual Voices contained in USER 2 by simply pressing the [USER 2] button, and so on. [USER 3], [USER 4] and [USER DR]
Move the Cursor to the list.

Use the Down Cursor or the DATA WHEEL to navigate the list
When you have found a VOICE you want to load, you can use the RIGHT CURSOR to move down to the bottom of the screen and set a target location inside your internal Motif XF to load that VOICE.

Once you have highlighted a VOICE and set a target location the word "LOAD" will appear above [SF2]
This will allow you to execute the load.
Press [SF2] LOAD

The XF will load everything it needs to play that VOICE (you do not mention you have a FLASH BOARD so we will forego any discussion of that for now). But just so you know in the lower right side of the FILE screen is where you would direct Samples and Waveform data to the internal USR(SDRAM) or the FL1/FL2 Boards.

ALTERNATIVE METHOD:
You can if you are using the "Motif XF Editor Standalone/VST" on your computer - You can audition Voice Libraries without having to load the VOICES into the Motif XF. In other words, if the Voice Library does not require you load any samples or waveform data, you can open the File in the EDITOR - and use the Editors ability to 'BULK' individual Voices to the Motif XF hardware's Edit Buffer - where you can audition them before deciding if you would like to keep it.

This is covered in the following article: Auditioning Voices from Files using the Motif XF Editor

In the 10th anniversary pack there are some VST B3 organs. I have never worked with VST's. How do you access them and do they remain always on the computer or can you load them in flash?

We are not sure exactly what it is you are referring to here. If you mean the YC-3B VST - that is a separate program that you can run on your computer and is a virtual tone wheel organ. You launch that as a VST inside of Cubase.

Launch Cubase
Go to DEVICES > VST INSTRUMENTS > Select YC-3B
Cubase will create an AUDIO LANE, an AUTOMATION LANE and ask if you want to create a MIDI Track to contain the data you wish to record with this instrument.

Very Helpful. Thanks. I'm okay with the single voice loading. Here is my new challenge. I finally got my flash boards delivered and installed. one 512 that came with the anniversary pack and a separate 1024 board. Both are installed.
The first two libraries I need help with are the 'Vintage Keys' and 80's pop and rock library. These were purchased originally for my XS. Both, I believe, were loading in USER 3.
I THINK I had to load the 80's library with an ALL because it had performances using the voices; and then load each of the voices individually from Vintage keys to another User as it had no performances that I can recall. SO................
I loaded 80's library into the XF using the 'ALL'. First, it loads into User 1 (which I have no problem with). Loads as it should and sounds great. Next I pick VOICE and open up the vintage keys library. There are voices to download, but not the right ones. Everlasting glory etc are the choices. I think that is internal sounds. Thought I might of somehow lost my library. So......... I thought what the heck and changed it to ALL and hit load. It loaded correctly and loaded into USER 3 with the correct library. When it loaded, USER 1 lost all of its contents and reverted back to the everlasting glory page. What do I need to do to get both libraries loaded.
I also want to load the Chick Corea. That loads on USER 4 so don't think it will be a problem. Then I also have the new downloads from the 'factory', 'expand your world' and the DCP sample library. I would only use a few selections so can load them in as a single voice.
Thanks in advance Lanny

To sum up your experience: you have discovered that the word "ALL" means all. Please read the following carefully. The Details count!
🙂
We will repeat the steps here, again. Because what you missed was how NOT to load ALL. ALL means you will be replacing ALL USER data (that is, all User Voices, all Performances, all Songs, all Patterns, all Utility settings, everything you can change as a "user" will be overwritten with the data in that ALL File).

If you do not want to load ALL the Voices, Performances, etc, then you must learn to use either Load TYPE = "voice" (which allows you to load one Voice at a time) or "1 Bank Voice" which lets you load an entire bank at a time. Both are explained below.... Please note the differences.

This is what you should have done.... Loaded the second library by directing its USER3 data to your your USER 1, USER 2, or USER 4 Bank. Here are the details:

LOADING A SINGLE VOICE
Here's how:
Press [FILE]
Set TYPE = Voice
Highlight your ALL data file (.X3A)
Press [ENTER] to "open" the file and see a list of Voices.

Initially, (and this is what you did not see) the [USER 1] button lights up to indicate you are viewing a list of Voices contained in that file's User 1 folder. (Starts with "Everlasting Glory" )
Press the [USER 3] button, it lights and the screen shows the Voices in the file's User 3 folder. You can now select any individual Voice and direct it to any individual location in your internal XF.
You can navigate the list with the DATA WHEEL, [INC/YES] button or the Down Cursor arrow.
Select the Voice you wish to load.
Move the cursor RIGHT to jump to the bottom of the screen and set the target location (inside your XF)
In the lower right corner you can direct the Waveform and Sample data from "FL1" of the File to your internal USR(SDRAM), FL1 or FL2. If the library contains new sampled data, you must direct it. If the data is already installed in FL set the target = None.
Press [SF2] LOAD

LOADING A BANK OF VOICES
If you want to load an entire bank (of say 128 Voices)
Here's how:
Press [FILE]
Set TYPE = 1 Bank Voice
Highlight your ALL data file (.X3A)
Press [ENTER] to open the file and see a list of five Folders in that File: User1, User2, User3, User4, and User Drum
Select User 3 by moving the cursor to highlight it
Press the RIGHT [>] CURSOR to the bottom of the screen and set the target Bank in your internal XF: USER 1, USER 2, or USER 4
In the lower right corner you can direct the Waveform and Sample data from "FL1" of the File to your internal USR(SDRAM), FL1 or FL2. If the library contains new sampled data, you must direct it. If the data is already installed in FL set the target = None.
Press [SF2] LOAD

Thank you. Sorry to keep on bugging you. Did what you said. Picked 1 Voice bank. Selected 80s pop and rock XS.A0A and opened it showing the USER 1 USER 2 USER 3 USER 4 and UDR Highlighted User 1(tried the others and when loaded they come up with initialized voice) Scrolled down and selected target as User 3. Hit load. Loaded as it should. How do I load the performances from that library?
Then I tried to open and do the same procedure with vintage keys except to USER 2 as a target. It goes thru the loading process but nothing appears.
I saw the selection 'PERFOMANCE' with the target user etc. Opened the file and saw the list of performances from the file. Highlighted a single performance and tried to load it to USER 3 where the voices were and a yellow caution sign comes up saying this performance uses voices. I'll get it sooner or later LOL

Sorry, I don't know the library you are talking about. Originally, you said you thought the Voices for this library were contained in User 3. You need to be certain about this or you will continue to be lost. Does the library come with any documentation about where the author placed the new Voices?

I thought also, that you had already loaded the library that included the PERFORMANCES as an ALL data file, and we're attempting now to add a single Bank of Voices from a second library. Did I misunderstand?

The warning about the Performances using USER VOICES appears any time you attempt to load an individual Performance that contains a reference to a User Voice location. This does not mean any thing more than you should now manually check that the Performance is referencing the correct Voice. You do so by recalling the Performance in [PERFORM] mode; press [F2] VOICE from the main screen and review the location (Bank/Number) of each "User"

When a PERFORMANCE is loaded it loads the fact that it referenced a Voice in USER 3, 013(A13) at the time it was made, not the Voice itself. So if the wrong Voice is currently in that location, you should manually navigate into that same File and set the Load TYPE = "voice" and find the original author's USER 3: 013(A13) and manually load it so the Performance finds the correct Voice in that location. Or you can manually repoint the Performance so that it finds the User bank that contains the actual Voice it is seeking...

Say you have redirected this Library's Voices to USER 1 in your internal XF, but the original data was directing it USER 3, then you can "fix" your Performance by manually substituting the Voice in 013(A13) from USER 1 into this Performance. Then [STORE] the updated data.

Even if the correct Voice is being referenced, the Warning that a User Voice is used appears... It wants you to visually check the Voice being referenced. Hope that makes sense.

This has all been very helpful. I appreciate your time. I met you a couple months ago when you were visiting the store with Andrew. Anyway I digress. I did some research. Both libraries were purchased from Motifator 80's Pop and Rock set loads to USER 3 It has no sample data. Has voices and performances. Loading into USER 3 would be fine. The other library is called Vintage Keys and loads into USER 1. It also has no sample data.
Here's what I would like to accomplish. First of all I backed up the factory cause I do like the new S6 pianos and the Clavs and they reside in User 1.
I have already loaded the Chick Corea in USER 4 by default. so that is done.
I then want to load voices and performances from 80's pop and rock to its default location USER 3
I then want to load Vintage Keys into its default location USER 1
Anything else that I want to load, I can do it one voice at a time, and I understand that process.
Thanks again in advance. LOl Don't know why this is not getting into my thiock skull.

If your goal is to have all of this data in you Motif XF at once, we can help you. It will be giving you the fish, versus teaching you to fish... But in working with it you will pick up exactly what's going on. It is complicated, only because it is solving a bigger issue for us.

We need just a few more details before we can recommend the best way to proceed. Again, we are not familiar with the 80's Library, at all, sorry. How many Voices and how many Performances are we talking? We ask because it might be quicker to load them altogether, rather than one by one. If you have 128 Performances, you don't want to be loading those one at a time. But if it is like 16 or 32 ....well, that kind of information would determine which method would be most efficient.
As much info on that library would be helpful.

And just for clarity's sake, we need to refer to the data in file as being "in a folder in that file". An ALL data load always returns the data to its original location. If the 80's Pop library has its new data in User 3, we should say: "the new Voices are in the USER3 folder of the file". Because when you use the Load TYPE = "1 Bank Voice" you can redirect the data from the USER3 folder to any of your internal Banks.

I have already loaded the Chick Corea in USER 4 by default. so that is done.
I then want to load voices and performances from 80's pop and rock to its default location USER 3
I then want to load Vintage Keys into its default location USER 1

Excellent. We will take this a step at a time - please be sure to follow this carefully. Then once successful you can work backwards to understand how we got were we got... But take the command "verify" very seriously because it will be that fork in the road that if you zig when you should have zagged you're in trouble.

_ Verify that indeed you have loaded and can play to your satisfaction the Chick Corea Voices in your USER 4 bank. Make sure this the case. We will not need to disturb this data, at all.

_ Let's load the "80's pop and rock vol 1" data using the Load "1 Bank Voice" and then the single "Performance" TYPES.
Press [VOICE] to enter Voice mode
Press [FILE]
Set the Load TYPE = 1 Bank Voice
Move the cursor up to the DIRECTORY and use the DATA WHEEL to highlight the ALL data File Name: 80sPR.X0A
Press [ENTER]

The file will "open" and you will see five folders inside this file: USER 1, USER 2, USER 3, USER 4, UDR.
The instructions for this library tell you the new data is in the USER 3 folder, highlight "USER 3"

Using the RIGHT CURSOR arrow once [>] Move down to the TYPE
Using the DOWN CURSOR arrow once highlight the target location on your internal Motif XF... "USER 3"
(there are no samples in this library so the settings on the lower right side for Load Options is meaningless here).

Review and VERIFY what you have setup: The "USER 3" Folder in the DIRECTORY is highlighted - the Load TYPE = 1 Bank Voice, the target is "USER 3" in your XF internal.
Press [SF2] LOAD to execute.

when completed...
_ Let's load the "80's pop and rock vol 1" and the 8 Performances using the Load load single PERFORMANCE. (Its much quicker than you would first think).
Press [PERFORM] to enter Performance mode (button lights)
Press [FILE] (button lights)
Set TYPE = "performance"
Move cursor up to the Directory and highlight the file name "80sPR.X0A"
Press [ENTER]
The [USER 1] buttons lights
The File will 'open' and reveal a list of PERFORMANCES in that folder. There are multiple FOLDERS each containing a List of individual PERFORMANCES. Use the [USER 1] -[USER 4] buttons to select the corresponding list. USER 1 is selected and listed automatically.

Press [USER 3] to see the list of PERFORMANCES in USER 3 of the FILE
Move the CURSOR to highlight the name and number of the PERFORMANCE you wish to load, start with 001 xxxxx
Use the RIGHT CURSOR arrow once to move out of the directory, use the DOWN CURSOR once to highlight and set the target destination: "USER 3: 001

Verify your settings. The PERFORMANCE you have highlighted in the Directory is getting ready to be loaded to the internal target location set at the bottom.
Press [SF2] LOAD to execute. You will be alerted by a warning that the PERFORMANCE you just loaded contains USER Voices. It wants you to go to PERFORMANCE mode, recall the PERFORMANCE and verify that the VOICES have indeed been reunited with the PERFORMANCE data properly. The load is extremely fast!!!!! - Yes, it loaded THAT FAST. The Performance is just a series of "pointers" and is quite small and loads, literally, in the blink of an eye.

Rinse and repeat loading from the FILE number 002 to USER 3: 002 in y our internal, and so on. Each time you will be alerted that the PERFORMANCE you just loaded uses USER Voices - it wants you to verify that the Voices are now again reunited with the locations that they are expected to be in. You can just ignore it and continue loading.

OKAY////

You now should have the Chick Corea Rhodes in your VOICE USER 4, the 80's Pop data in USER 3, and the first 8 Performances in PERFORMANCE USER 3 are recalling the Voices from USER 3.

you don't mention what you have in USER 2, (you know that USER 1 has unique Voice data?) - so we will let you choose where you want to load the Vintage Keys library. USER 1 or USER 2, your choice:

_ finally lets load the "VintageKeysXS.X0A" to USER 1 or USER 2
Press [VOICE] to enter Voice mode
Press [FILE]
Set the TYPE = 1 Bank Voice
Move the cursor up into the DIRECTORY and highlight the file by name "VintageKeysXS.X0A"
Press [ENTER] to 'open' the File
You see the 5 folders of this File: USER 1, USER 2, USER 3, USER 4, and UDR
Highlight the USER 1 file because that is where you say the new data resides.

Use the RIGHT CURSOR arrow once to move out of the directory.
Use the DOWN CURSOR arrow once to highlight the target destination - set this to USER 1 or USER 2 - depending on where you really want to place these VOICES.
Again - you are importing data from a Motif XS library file, so there is no data for FLASH boards so you needn't worry about what goes on on the lower right side

Press [SF2] LOAD to execute.

Once completed VERIFY everything that is there should be there and sounds proper. Make sure you check everything.

Before you power down or walk away... make a new ALL data file that backs up the work you have just done. If you do not - you will need to do this again. If you make a back up file you will laugh at how easy it was to assemble your data into one file. 🙂

I recommend you make two backup files; one is a SAVE ALL "with Samples" and the other is a SAVE ALL "without Samples"

The one "with Samples" - drag onto your computer desktop and keep it as an "archive safety backup" file because if ever you need to redo your Samples and Waveform list you have a complete record of your FLASH BOARD(s) in this "archive" file. This big 'archive' file will have the extension ".n2.X3A" if you have one Flash Board, and ".X3A" if you have data for two Flash Boards.

The smaller one "without Samples" - will not only be much smaller and easier to search through but quicker to work with on a daily basis. Only when you add something to your FLASH BOARD do you need to create a new "archive backup" file. This smaller one will have the extension ".n3.X3A" As you get more and more data, you will appreciate that you do not have to wait for the big data, if you manage your files right. There is never a need to reload the Chick Corea Samples and Waveforms (that's done). So the file "without Samples" will allow you to restore everything you need on a daily basis.

Even if you load a new VOICE bank over your Chick Corea Voices in USER 4, you break out your "without Samples" smaller file and all you need to do is load the VOICE data back with the FL1 set to "NONE" (FL1>NONE). And quick as a bunny your Chick Corea Voices are back. No waiting for that BIG data ever again.

No problem this time. Just wanted to shout out a BIG thank you for all of your time. You are the man. Everything is on board and ready to go. Had a lot of practice loading and reloading. LOL. The libraries had some weird glitches. Number one was that both had the wrong data folder listed. That list I sent you was from Motifator. They were opposite .Vintage was loading in 3 and 80s was loading in 1. And loading Vintage as a 1 Bank caused 1 out of the 128 Voises not to work. Weird. So anyway, I loaded the vintage as an all kknowing I would lose everything else. Then loaded 80's as a 1 Bank and did the performances one by one and finally reloaded Chick Corea. Everything is loaded and working fine. The original User one from the factory and the other libraries I have I will cherry pick the sounds I want and put in USER 2. So anyway once again Thanks for everything!!!!!!!! Lanny Welch Music Ctr Boise Id

The best way to learn about the load options is by working with them. Don't be afraid to dive in! Glad you got it sorted.
