Does the, now discontinued, Motif XF have all of the same sounds/voices, etc. - as the new Montage?

I really have a hard time liking all of the 70's looking different shades of blue, red, orange, and yellow lights all over the Montage.

Depends on how you look at it. Montage has all 3977 waveforms of the Motif XF (and all arpeggios, etc) - so the reverse would say that Motif shares a big chunk of the same waveforms, arps, etc. from Montage. However, Montage adds another 2370 waveforms to the Motif XF set - and more ARPs, etc.

At the performance level - pre-canned performances, there's more programming there so you start with more collections of what in Motif would be "Voices" assembled together.

In terms of voices/arps/etc - I'd say Motif XF shares over half the content of Montage. The superknob can be lots of colors including off - so that need not be too distracting.

The color palette of the rest of the unit is amber for most LEDs and blue for the scenes. Not exactly a rainbow of crazy colors.

The touch screen is what it is - it does have a variety of colors but a fairly "sterile" color palette - not distracting. It's between the old Korg white background and Roland's usual black background approach (grey background).

The predominant color of all the buttons is amber. Some are dimly lit - meaning (mostly) you can press this to activate. Or brightly lit which (mostly) means this function is currently activated. Or off which (mostly) indicates the feature is not available.

Like most Yamaha synths of the past - and other synths from other manufacturers - buttons change meaning depending on current mode. So the dimming feature is fairly useful to guide.

However, some prefer to use the touchscreen and eschew the buttons (or the other way around). So button dimming may not be important/useful to all. You can turn this feature off if it bothers you.

On the other hand, I have found the Jupiter series multi-color (true rainbow) to be kind of distracting. However, my final judgement is made by the noise that comes out of speakers rather than the button colors. But aesthetics are opinions - so you have every right to put the board on the chopping block for this.
